Posts: 21 | I haven't been to LOTW in a couple years and I am wondering what is the latest info on the impact of the crayfish on the weeds and fish. Specifically, I am wondering if certain areas of the lake have been impacted more than others. For example, I think most of the weeds have been gone from the Big Narrows for awhile now. Have the fish still been biting there and how has that affected their location? In contrast, Sabaskong had a good population of weeds. Is that still the same, or has that changed too. Thanks for the info. Brian

Location: Contrarian Island | good cabbage is hard to come by. the rustys have decimated most of the weeds on lotw... a lot of the cabbage beds are now replaced with some sort of "spaghetti weed" .. the fish still use it... I wouldn't be overly concerned about having to find weeds, muskies use bare sand, that spaghetti weed, cabbage if you can find it, and rocks... fish it all...

Posts: 331 Location: Stevens Point, Wisconsin | I have fished the lake for 20 years and the march of the crayfish that originated in the Kenora area and passed through the angle is well on it's way to the SE corner of the lake. Fish still use the once weedy bays but with no weed to hold the fish and bait, they slide up and out now rather than set up in or around the weed. More a matter of timing on those spots now. I actually fish a lot of sand especially early season and during cold fronts. Unfortunately the lake simply fishes smaller now with most of the pressure focused on rock spots. Sure miss all the submergent cabbage spots along featureless rock shorelines. They were incredible spots that held multiple fish and if you didn't know they were there they were passed by. Don't fish those spots anymore and they were so good 15 years ago! Broadleaf cabbage can still hold lots of fish but that seems to be a timing thing as well. Sure miss the lake I found 20 years ago but I imagine Dick and Doug miss the lake they found 40 years ago. Still a great place to chase muskie and still some great fishing! Ed

Posts: 409 Location: Almond, WI | My first time up was last year. Coontail seemed to be good if you could find it. The green bean weeds (spaghetti weeds others call them, but the seed pods look like green beans) were good if they were in combination with other weed types or rocks. Our best two spots were pockets of coontail along a reed shoreline, and green bean weeds growing in and around boulders.

Pointerpride102 - 5/30/2019 2:11 PM That weed is water celery. Vallisneria americana Over the years we have had that by our dock a couple of times. It is a pain to fish or to even go through slowly with an outboard, but the years when we have had it the pan fishing off our dock for blue gills and crappies has been the best. I found I could fish it on other spots on the lake using a musky sized buzz bait like the Klack. Just have to get it moving as soon as it touches the water.

Posts: 31 | went to lac seul in 2017. It was the first time i'd been back in 11 years. The spots I had dreamed about returning to were very different without cabbage. Due to the crayfish I'm guessing? I didn't expect that and to see these spots barren of the lush green cabbage stalks I remembered from years ago was actually mentally/emotionally hard to take. I would agree with Musky Time that the good spots are still good but timing is crucial. They are used by fish still.... However they by no means HOLD fish like they used to. Sad to see the cabbage go but glad to have experienced the muskie wonderland that once existed. Not complaining so much as reminiscing.
