Heading to Bone this weekend with my Son and some friends..was wondering if this lake still puts out like it has in the past? anyone fish it? I find it hard to believe that no one talks about it..in 30 years of Muskie fishing I have had my best day on this lake(11 fish boated over 40"in one morning)thanks in advance for any info..

Pappa Joe and I fished it for a few hours late August. He boated a low 30"s and I boated a high 30"s. Saw another guy who caught, as I recall, 3 fish that afternoon/evening. Bone still puts out. MuskyOne (Mike Hoen) knows the lake VERY well and he's a great guy. Try sending him an e-mail with your question.

I've fished Bone a lot over the last 20 years and this is about the worst year I've ever had on that lake. The fish are just weird, and they are in wierd places. I expected big things this fall, but nothin' to show for it so far. Turnover seems to have been going on forever. Weeds are dead to about the 6' line, some green stuff on the 8' ledge. I haven't seen anything returning to the shallows yet.

Sucks.

Plus I think that there's a bumper-crop of forage in the lake right now: every bass, pike and muskie that I've caught this year has been FAT--like 30% over what you'd expect in weight.

Just spent thur and friday on bone with my 7 year old, water temps were around 53 both days, it seems the turnover is still hanging on there, she is still green, and escpecially when you get around the corner of wind blown points. Thursday moved 3 or 4 fish, had one miss a suick on the rise, did end up with a nice bass and a decent northern(becoming to common). Friday we had action from about 10-12 muskies, no takers on artificial, my son lost a fish on quickstrike rig, wrong rod for the situation. Weeds are definitely disappearing, usualy was tough to sucker fish with all the weeds but not a problem last week. Most fish chasing chart/copper bionic bucktail. Most action was on shoreline west on the big island, there is 3 bouys along the shoreline, next was just doing laps around the big island. Keeping boat in about 9-11 ft casting shallow and just staying out of the thick weeds, once I didn't tick weed I would slide in a little closer. Saw alot of crappie up sitting on the surface as I was drifting by them, never seen so many crappie just sitting on the top of the water column.

Good luck

Bone has been slow this year at best. There was a time when anywhere I was fishing I wished I was back on Bone but not for the last year or two. Fishing has been tough. Still pretty warm here so I believe that the fish will still go on Jerk baits and Bucktails. Normally this time of year the jig bite really picks up bigtime. Try a jig on the rocks a little this weekend as well. Look for any coontail that is still alive and green. You will find the fish in Bone relating to these areas.
There has been a large resurgence in the Largemouth Bass population both in numbers and size. This usually happens when the Muskie population is in a downturn. I hope that this is not the case but it seems that there may not be the number of fish in the lake as there once was.. Maybe we just need to look for them in different locations. Seems that the good old spots are not full of fish anymore. Let me know how you do, I am very interested in the numbers of fish that you see and get to bite.

Thanks for the info Troyz and Mike..I have not been on the lake in 2 years and it sounds like things have changed a bit..but our group has done well in the past and we know all the spots and spend alot of hours on the water, this time of year jigging reapers and bulldawgs and draggin meat is the way to go ,(some times night fishing is better). thanks for all your help and anyone that is going out there Ill be in a 18' alumacraft/115 merc.+merc. kicker..stop and say hi and get the report..Howie.
