Last night when I got home from picking up my 7- year old she asked me , "Dad, when will I be big enough to muskie fish?"
Well 10 minutes later I came out of the basement with a 6'10" St Croix with a 5500C3 and a 2 ounce lure with no hooks. Outside we went for a brief instruction period and a tight freespool. When she looked like she was getting the hang of it, I started loosening the freespool a little at a time. 15 minutes later the lure was flying over the neighbors fence about 25 yards away.
"I think you're ready." I told her, but theres one more test. After she casted I ran out and grabbed the lure and started yanking and pulling and tugging and running. She laughed her butt off, but learned right away what her most powerful grip was.
We also found out that she want's a left-handed model for a reel.
Looks like I have to make room in the boat for next season.....or I gotta get a bigger boat.

AWESOME story!

I did the exact same thing with my kids in the yard when teaching them about griping the rod and hook setting. It's lots of fun to see the determination on their face while you're pretending to be a stubborn ol' fish. Keep us posted, Cap'n.

I used to do that with my son when he was small only we called it "DOG FISHING" I would tie an old tennis ball or Rawhide bone to the end of the line, my son would cast it out and the dog would chase it and grab it, then the tug of war was on. Great game still for the off season

I guess I would have to be counted in that group as well, but it's been a few years since my boy was seven , actually he 13 now and cast just as good as anybody else in my boat if not better.

The only thing better then me putting a nice muskie in the boat is watching my son do it.

Good hunting and make time to take your kids out fishing

Good deal Beav! (can't get used to the capt. thing yet).

We need more lefties anyway. Gives us more leverage with the reel makers! If you can find any reconditioned 5501UC's anywhere, pick them up! Jackson's often has the recons, and the UC is my favorite.

Looking forward to pics of the new partner and her first 'ski!

Beav, that is totally cool. St. croix makes a 6'6" rod with a bass handle and has the same rating as their bucktail rod 1/2-2oz. We bought one for my mom and it works great. Handles musky stuff well. We put a curado on it, they make it in left hand also. I would inquire to garcia to see if they make a 3003g torno in a left hand model. Casts farther and gets fewer backlashes.

Cool, Beav!

You're introducing females, and left-handers, to the sport?  Excellent.

I have the Cabela's Abus, "red reels," and find they're good.  Maybe the 5601 would be a good size for your daughter.  The 6601 is great too, but might be a bit big.  I find my Shimano Calcutta 251 is pretty small, but you have to crank like crazy to get any retrieve speed because of the small spool.  Aw, just buy her a 401TE!

Captain,

That young lady will kick your butt out on the water fishing muskies, and you know that. Just keep the net ready!

I've got my eye on a 5501C4 for her Christmas list. I think that the magnets might be a good idea for her. Whatever it is, it'll be great just to have her and Becky both in the boat with me. Think that I'll wear my hockey helmet for the first few outings.
