What would be a good, economical boat and motor for use on a lake with a 10 mph speed limit? I would like to seat four, if possible. How much would one expect to pay for such an outfit?

Seat or fish four? Do you troll? It just depends on what you want. You obviously don't need a big motor but you may need a big boat depending on your exact needs as it stands with 4 people. I am also assuming these lakes are not very big?

The lakes are Lost Land and Teal. Together they are about 2,500 acres. No trolling. I have a wife and two small children. Mostly, it would only be one or two people fishing, but I'd like everyone to have a place to sit. Thanks.

Is there a hp limit? If no HP limit you have lots of options. If you have a HP limit on those lakes maybe something along the lines of a Lund Rebel(or similar boat by other manufactures..crestliner, alumacraft,princecraft,moirrorcraft,etc..)..a 14' rebel might be slightly cramped but if memory is correct can be run with a max hp of 25. If it has a ten HP limit then I reccomend going with a used 9.9 Johnson/evinrude 2stroke with the carb upgrade. The upgrade jumps HP up to 15 but motor is still 9.9.. I forget what the newest 9.9 you can do that with is. With a 9.9(15 upgrade) the boat won't be a total slug.

There is no horsepower limit, just the speed limit and no water skiing. I would think, however, that having an engine above a certain horsepower would be a waste because of the 10 mph speed limit. Is that true?

Yes and no. I fish the Barbee chain quite a bit. Every lake but one is 10mph or less. I have a 40hp evinrude that gets finicky if I don't do a run across big barbee wide open every once in awhile. It helps clear out the "cobwebs". Not sure about 4 strokes if they need to be run like that but a 25 4 stroke on something like a 14'/16' Rebel or equivalent I would think would work well. I think the 2 strokes (like my 40) would tend to have more problems not being opened as much. Also a 25, if a storm comes up quickly, would get you back to the ramp or dock quicker and possibly safer. With a 10mph limit I don't know that I'd go much bigger then a 25. Here is a couple links to Lund boats: http://www.lundboats.com/index.cfm?intMenuItemID=2782&strLocation=C...

I am just using the Lunds as examples of what might work for you. Also, if used works for you this is usually a great time of year to look at used boats. I'm not current on prices myself so can't help there but think a Rebel new for around $7000-8000 with a 25 might be possible. Don't quote me on that one....just a guess.

A rebel would do for "right now" but i would get something a bit bigger for when your kids get into casting. I think your best deal on a boat would be a crestliner 1750 with a 90 or a 115 on it. Your looking at about 13,500 or 14 for it. This time of year you might find a really good deal. Lund makes great boats too and you can find good used baots too. I would get a lund or crestliner 17ft or 18ft long. You will be satisfied with that.

Patriot 1690T? Usually comes with 3 seats, can have an extra one put in if need be. I just happen to know one coming up for sale soon too....

Go 4 stroke if you go 90/115.. Never seen a 2stroke that big operate good consistently not being opened up like I mentioned above.. Those big 2stroke motors are meant to be moving not idling.
