Posts: 3 | Just curious, I just bought a new used boat. It had almost no gas, so filler her up and tried her for the first time and she ran sputtering and poor, wouldn't maintain. I bought her in March below freezing so I couldn't try her. The older farmer I bought her from had receipts fully serviced end year a boat dealership. He said too old and used very little why selling the 2014. After she warmed up she ran great. Anything I should look into on this? I did buy injector cleaner to put in the tank of gas I added for the next trip out even though she ran good after warmed up.

Posts: 323 | I would check the fuel filter first. You may have debris in the filter hindering the flow. Also I would pull the fittings off the fuel line to see if it is deteriorating. I had that happen in one of my fuel lines. My mechanic said the particular fuel line had an inside liner that would break down. The filter was filled with what looked like gobs of silicone. This debris was also in the carbs which needed a rebuild. Maybe VMS Steve will chime in and share his thoughts. He knows his stuff and is always a great source of info. Welcome to the board! Nice to see some gals on the board that share our passion!

| If it ran well after it warmed up, could be something that happens with my 90hp Merc 4 stroke, fuel injected motor on my pontoon boat. To store the boat in my garage, need to tilt the motor up quite a bit. Sometimes a small amount of oil will seep into the cylinders and the plugs will be impacted. This year that happened and had to run the motor for about half an hour before it consistently ran smoothly. I don't think it is limited to Mercury motors, the Suzuki dealer where I take my Pro V to be serviced said to store the boat for the winter with the motor all the way trimmed down to avoid fouling the plugs. | |||

Posts: 3508 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Hiya, This sounds like an engine that just has not been run for a while. With the engine sitting a while and stored properly, it may take a little more time to get things cleared out of the system. A couple of things that can be done have already been stated. Replace the fuel filter, and then add a can of seafoam to the tank so the carb/injectors get some deeper cleaning while you run. There is no need to run premium fuel in the engine...that is just wasted money as the engine being a 2014 will be designed to run 87 octane. This fuel just by design will help to clean out any other "stuff" in the engine and ultimately will keep the engine clean once any contaminants are loosened up and burned out. If possible, get a can of pressurized seafoam. A good thing you can do is once the engine is warm, spray some seafoam directly into the throttle body intake while the motor is at a high idle (like 1500 RPMs) ...the motor will start to sputter a bit and white smoke will start coming out the exhaust. Continue to do this for a few minutes, then spray until the motor dies. Once the motor dies, spray a bit more in, then let the engine sit for an hour or longer. What this process is going to do is clean the combustion chamber of any possible deposits, build up, etc. that might be in there. Take the motor out for a good spin and get it up to speed...burn out all the crud. When you first start it up, it will blow a lot of white smoke. Don't be worried about it, it'll subside. At this point, the engine should be running a lot smoother if it was gunked up at all. After this process is done, it definitely would not hurt to replace the spark plugs, if for anything more than preventative maintenance. I'd also suggest carrying an extra fuel filter as well. If the boat only had non-oxygenated fuel running through it, there could be a bunch of contaminants that could let loose and clog a filter, causing poor idle, poor acceleration, etc. It would be the first thing to replace if the engine sputters. My gut says its just a dirty engine... Steve

Posts: 26 | My motor runs rough the first time I run it every spring. I thought it was just burning off the fogging oil from winterizing it.
