| My Mecury 150 opti is leaking gear lube from the rubber seal around the prop shaft where it comes out of the lower unit. Anyone have any knowledge/expierience with this problem? I'm guessing the seal needs replacing, but would love to hear some insight/suggestions from others. Thanks ahead of time! |

Location: Athens, Ohio | Yep, it's a leaker. To be sure, drain out the lube in a clean pie pan, if it's milky or you see water separating, that is likely the source. Pull the prop and see if there's fishing line wrapped around the shaft that may have cut into your seal. Get someone who knows how to replace it, have them do the water impeller while they are at it, too. m |

| Yeah, there's definitely water in getting in for sure. No line on the shaft but the seal does look like it may have a tear in it. Tough to get a good look cause any probing just lets more lube come pouring out, but I could see what looks like a torn little flap of the seal in there. Thanks for the reply! |

Location: Athens, Ohio | You need to drain all the watery lube OUT and put fresh lube in until such time as you can get the seal repaired. Don't ever leave a lower unit without lube in it (moisture + air = rust). m
When you pump the fresh lube in, trim the motor straight up and down and pump it from the bottom hole up, leaving the top screw out until you see lube coming out; give it a minute for the air to work thru and pump it again, then put the upper screw on first when it is done 'burping'. m
