Posts: 5 | I am getting started in musky fishing. I bought a cirvskus to start out with. Iv never used a baitcaster. I watched some you tube videos this reel doesn't have a break like waa showed in the video I watched, other then putting pressure on the line before it hits the water is there anything I need to know casting this reel?

To start out learning a bait caster it's probably not a bad choice, but if you end up liking muskie fishing you'll be buying a new reel in no time. It just does not hold up to the kind of lures we throw and does not cast well. The best thing to do for learning to cast is to use a topwater like a giant jackpot or similar. They cast very easily because they are streamline. Other lures grab a lot of air so it takes a little more skill to cast them. My recommendation is to upgrade the reel before you use it and cast with the type of lure I mentioned to learn.

Posts: 983 | not to mention if you go get a decent reel the braking system can make them almost dummy proof!!

Posts: 1901 Location: MN | The Corvallus does have spool brakes and a cast control knob. My son and I used these reels for a couple years with very few issues until we got into it heavy and upgraded. I'd say use it to start and if you have any problems I'll keep them running well for you. Edited by Propster 3/14/2019 11:23 AM

Posts: 32 Location: West Bend WI | I've used a Corvalus 300 for several years. Worked fine. But there is a difference in cast quality between it and the Calcutta that I use also. I also use Cardiffs. They're all good enough reels. I did retire the Corvalis (to backup status) for this upcoming season with a Abu 5601 C4. To get to learn the Corvalus set the spool brakes to where 4 of the six are active, use a jerk or similar bait of a several ounces, set the spool cast control knob to where the bait will drop slowly when you take thumb off spool, and have at it. Check the lure drop from time to time while learning as the spool cast control knob tension can change, adjust accordingly. Consider 65# braided line, 80# if you feel the need, I like Power Pro just because I do. No mono for me.

Posts: 5 | Thanks everyone, I got a chance to use it for a couple hours , it really wasn't difficult to learn to cast it, how ever it broke already. I bought it used in evay. My first and last time buying used equipment on the net. So I need a brand new one. I'm considering a Cardiff or a max toro. What is your guys expierence with them? Thanks
