| I know this has been mentioned before but just wanted to remind folks how great it is if you can take a kid fishing. Was out on the ice today, catching a few crappies and a family set up not far from me. Mom, dad and 4 kids, with the oldest maybe 10 or 11.
Dad drilled a bunch of holes set up some tip downs, told them all what to watch for, etc.
The kids in our area were cooped up for three days with no school because of extreme cold. These kids were ready to be outside! The older one would set the hook and pull up the fish, the younger ones mom or dad would hook the fish and kids would reel it in. Dad tried to show one of the younger ones how to jig while watching the flasher but that was a little too much. When they got a little bored, dad took a couple of younger ones in the Otter behind his 1980s Honda three wheeler and pulled them in a big circle.
They were out for about 2 and a half hours and they were all still laughing and smiling when it came time to pack up. They had pulled each other in the sled, tossed some snowballs and caught some crappies. (even tossed a snowball or two at mom)
Went over and talked with mom and dad when they were getting ready to leave and they were all smiles too. Said the kids wanted to be outside, to get out of the house!
One of the younger ones brought the bucket over to show me the fish they were taking home and he was very proud. It had to be some work to pack up all the gear, buy bait and get all four bundled up to be on the ice and then drive out to the lake but it sure was worth it. |

Location: minocqua, wi. | i can remember changing diapers on the ice ... great sport to teach kids a skill, have some fun and leave memories that last a lifetime. i'm fortunate to have some great ice-fishing friends. our favorite part of the sport is spending time with our regular annual visitors at the shack. when kids are there, they get priority!! our littles are all grown up and still fish with us now as young adults. |
