Posts: 3 | Let’s talk glide bites. i fish 6” Phantom Softails pretty much exclusively and absolutely love them. pretty much all of my fish this year have come on them. I’ve noticed that 1 out of every 4 (roughly) don’t glide correctly. no difference in retrieve or anything. they just don’t work right. My question is, am I doing something wrong? Also, what type of rod do you prefer for fishing glide baits? I know leaders can make a slight difference (I use floro), but why would some work and some not work under the same circumstances? School me. Thanks, guys!

I have two of the 7.5" soft tails, and other than color I don't really see any difference. The fish prefer the one with the orange tail, but the action seems the same. Sorry I can't help.

Posts: 20253 Location: oswego, il | I do not remember if these are still wood baits but sometimes inconsistencies in the wood can create issues with a glide bait. Make sure the line tie, hook hangers and tail are all straight. Also try what JD said. I have never seen one that did not work either. If you still have issues with it, contact them and I am sure they will take care of it.

Location: Athens, Ohio | http://www.stealthtackle.net/index.php?route=product/category&path=... what he said! Also, I use soft tail baits almost exclusively. I find that the rubber tail often times needs trimmed at the bend to make it more ribbon like. If the tail is thick on the ones that don't work (after you go all steel leader on them!), try trimming abt an eighth inch half moon off the bend and see if that helps. m

Posts: 3 | Thanks, guys. Gonna trim the tails a bit and make sure everything is straight then try running them again. I asked about rods because I'm using a 9' lighter, more moderate action rod and wondered if a stiffer, more faster action rod would be more beneficial for the bait to run better. I'll add that I'm using spinning gear. I fish from shore this time of the year and most of the spots i need to hit require long casts and spinning gear is just easier. BTW, was not a knock on Phantom whatsoever. I love their baits and will continue to use them religiously. Was just asking a question!

Also, be sure your jerk is more downwards and not up in the air or sideways, which were some of my many earlier errors. That's tough from shore unless you are up the bank a ways. Your best move would be to use a baitcasting setup with a higher speed reel like an ABU C-4. It is possible you are not getting a good slack line pickup with your current rig. It will be more challenging with backcasts hitting shoreline obstructions, but you can develop a good side cast. m

Posts: 63 | I've used Phantoms and for a glide bait they seem pretty easy to work. I prefer the Squirko because of the up/down action. MH- Heavy 7'6" rod with a wire leader connected to a split ring seems to give the best "snap" on the water to work them properly. I don't palm the reel when working these but hold the rod above the reel with my non-reeling hand to get quick leverage. I don't use a longer rod because it seems to spongy. I use my ABU C4 on this rod like Mike said The Squirko took me a minute to figure out but after a couple of days I could get it to glide long distances and pause and then mix it up.

Posts: 1039 | LOL. Those squirkos...especially the small ones are finicky! I've put my phantom's away and moved to other glides. I've found that the leader (as stated) is important. Straight wire is best. But...the rod has more to do with action. Love the 7.5 foot rods, XH. I got a Bulldog rod from Jeff Hanson that works most glides exceptionally well. I paired it with a 400D reel. It is offset so I can wrap my left thumb around it for easy control. That setup is by far my favorite...and I love glide baits. Good luck to you.

Posts: 390 | Ive had exactly the same issue with the phantoms. I have found ~1:4 don't work well and ~1:4 glide extremely well. Just contact phantom lures and they will change it out for you. Wire leaders help somewhat but the good ones will glide well with flouro as well. I use a 8"6 H for most of the gliders I throw under 10"

Posts: 343 | I use to use Phantoms quite a bit, caught one of the first southern muskies on the first softtails that came out at the Chicago Show that year. I now mostly fish Hellhounds as they glide better and are as easy or easier to work than Phantoms. I think all Phantoms are plastic now, but I won't guarantee it.
