I received this by e-mail from my MI chapter President. So sad, we should direct many thoughtful prayers to Perry & his family.
Membership,

I'm sorry to have to advise you that MI International President, Perry Smith, is gravely ill.

I had heard some rumors lately but contacted Intl. Treasurer Jim Beatty to verify.

He told me that Perry has malignant tumors (cancer) in his right lung and liver. The prognosis is not good for the long term. He is currently undergoing chemotherapy and it seems to be helping somewhat. He has a lot of bad days then about a week after each treatment feels somewhat better. He has had some better days this week but is scheduled for another treatment later in the week. Perry himself e-mailed me this week about some MI business and told me he feels a little better this week.

Jim advised that we should not cover Perry up with e-mails because he tires very easily and this would not be necessarily be best for him. He advised that any who wanted should send a card, this might be better. I've included Perry's address and it also appears in the magazine.

As you know, Perry has worked hard to improve MI for our benefit and continues to do so even at this time. It would be good to let him know we are thinking of him during this trying time. He constantly tells me how he enjoyed his stay with us last spring and how much he cherished the friendships he developed here.

Thanks,

Jim Moore

Mikie,
I was totaly without words when Perry told me of his battle with cancer. It came attached to an email that Perry sent me about how Muskies Inc International would stand behind me all the way with the International Guide Raffle for Little Andrew Luchovick's Trust. Here is a man that is reaching out to help others in need,at a time when he should be resting to take care of himself.Perry is in my Prayers every day!

It's probably no surprise to those who know him but he's still trying to over-do it and is still very active to the extent his body will permit in MI activities. He was actually on our membership committee con-call the other night for a short time. He did not sound well. We wish him the best.

I had a chance to meet Perry this winter in minnesota. I was shocked to hear it too. I hope he can beat this thing. We can all learn from this man's passion to make MI the best it can be.

This is indeed a shock. I'll keep Perry and his family in my prayers. I agree he has been the most proactive president I can remember, and his tireless efforts have benefitted all who fish muskies. I'll make sure our Flatlanders chapter is made aware of this at tonight's meeting.
