Hi all,
We just got home from the Ireland best trip of the year. I’ve guided three people in search of highlands big pike. Only the last fishing day we’d broke every expectation in a particular “trout water” boating an impressive series of big fish: 46’’, 44’’, 41’’, 39’’, 38’’, 38’’, 37’’, 36’’ and a half dozen of fish just something small. All in one day! All these fish comes to 10’’ magnum bucktail swimming jigs I made, also hand pouring the big grub trailer, (something like bull dawg but with the pulsation of the hair added) and the same version of this jig tied as spinnerbait. This is the best fishing day I ever had and the best satisfaction as pike guide, consider we have not fishing in a remote Canadian fly in lake but in a pressured old world water. All is full of fascination, peace and tradition in this incredible country. We’ve leave home our high tech boat rigs and adapted to traditional Ireland’s luogh boats, made of wood and equipped with very simple 4 or 6 hp engines! We only add some portable fishfinder to this boats. I’ve find all the big fish of the day suspended at 20’ under school of perch in the main lake big hole with 45’ depht. Now we plan to make contact with those 50’’ plus fish that swim in the lakes we know…
The entire story, also in English, is coming in my web site.
Hope to hear your impression.
Luca

Luca,

I sure love those Euro Pike! What a couple of dandies! It makes me want to get to my family's home country, Sweden. I hear Vattern has some nice pike. And it's beautiful too. Thanks for the pictures.

Luca,

Have you met Alan Broderick? He is pretty much 'Mr Pike' in Ireland. We shipped a Tuffy to him back when I was selling for those people, and a pile of Lunds too.

I just got some pics in the mail from a guy in Germany we sent a shipment of baits to, I'll try to get some listed here. HUGE Euro Pike!!!!

I wish we could grow Pike that size here! Small kids couldn't go swimming in the lakes anymore, but.....!!

Steve if your roots are in Sweden for sure are in the right place for piking. Don’t know Vattern but Baltic sea near Stockholm still be one of the best destinations of the world.

Steve W., I know about A. Broderick guide service and having recommended him to some of my tackle shop clients in the past. This time I started to fish in the water system where he guide but I’ve opt for searching a different water with better condition, and far less pike fishing pressure. This invariably mean not having good boats, but with plenty of big fish action we've quickly forget these things.

Thanks
Luca

I can't remember where they said this big gator came from. Somewhere in Europe. What are your guesses for length and weight. I don't know.

Not only are the pike in Ireland huge, but the scenery is gorgeous and the Guinness is oh so good! My cousins live just outside of Westport Co. Mayo, which is just a few miles from some great pike lakes.

Andy Broderick's site can be found at http://www.irelandpike.com/

And here is another Irish pike site http://www.esoxireland.com/

I have a relative in County Sligo in Ireland that has a B&B and does some Guiding or is able to provide it(ghillie service?), I think for Salmon/Trout only. I think he fishes Salmon on the River Moy, Salmon and Sea Trout on Carramore and Beltra Loughs, Salmon and brown Trout on Lough Conn and "Salmon and Sea Trout on three of the finest spate rivers in the west". His place is called Links Lodge. Not sure how the pike fishing is in that area but if your going after some salmon or trout it should be a good place to try.

I fished the Moy Valley (south of Ballina) with my brother in law and one of his relatives for a few hours several years ago. Caught one nice salmon and saw several others. Might have had better luck if we hadn't been working off hang-overs!

Also heard that there were some nice pike in Lough Conn, but never confirmed the reports. Saw some remote, deep lakes in Connemara and a few in County Clare that looked like they had a lot of pike potential too... but didn't have an opportunity to fish them. Maybe next time.

Big Lakes of the west, Mask and Corrib the first of the list, have a great reputation for big pike. Probably the best of the country. The only problem is with trout fisheries managers who nets, remove or kill big pike. But these waters are too bigs and still exists some good potential for huge fish.

Mr. Pike, sorry I can't remember where I got that photo from last year. But that is one gigantic Pike. Any guesses from everybody on length and weight?

Hi

I've seen the piture somewhere before in a European pike magazine & I seem to remember it's been confirmed as a fake.

Looking at the picture, I don't see how it could be fake but I guess anything is possible these days.

I think the weight the guy claimed was fake or how it was captured, not the actual fish. I think it was in the esox angler magazine this summer.
