In NE Wisco where regs have 1 line per person.. Opinions on trolling basin with one line versus casting when fishing solo. Almost think casting may present better coverage in an area over trolling one bait.

Fished a Presque Isle lake all last week and put 10 fish in the boat. I caught three casting to shallow structure and the other seven were caught trolling the basin with one line. I arrived on Friday evening and was fishing by 7pm. That evening I had 4 fish in the net trolling with one line before 10pm. The lake I was on has multiple deep basin areas that hold musky and while I do cast those areas as well it is so much more productive to troll in order to find out which basins have active fish. The last Saturday morning of the trip I casted one of the basins for 1.5 hours then started to troll and had a fish in the net in 2 minutes.

We only get one line in MN all the time. Trolling will help you cover more water while you bait stays in the water all the time. I would say troll until you mark bait fish/muskies and then circle around and try casting that area. this will allow to to search out more water as well.

x2

Troll to learn the lake/area while looking for places to cast.

I'll start trolling when I get older. Too boring for me right now.

I will troll a spinnerbait or crankbait from spot to spot unless it's a long run.
