I am looking to bick up a few more reels to replace some of the older equipment I have been using. I am going to be using them for client rods. I thought I would take some of the money I won and put it into the guide buisness.

What is your choice of reels? I am looking for all answers and opinions. Bucktail, Jerkbait, glide bait and surface bait rods. I am looking to pick up a couple new reels, maybe two different ones or ????

Help me out, what do you think is the most durable and best buy?

I would like to stay with the top of the line caliber equipment. I was thinking something under the calcutta 400's. I have two of them already and was thinking of the 6500's or something like that. Just which ones do you buy? The C3's, C4's or ??????

I Love my Dawia Millionaire CVZ-250 at bit pricey @ $200 but what a smooth and reliable reel, mine is now 3 years old and have never had a problem

I would pick up a couple Abu Morrum's.  The 5600 is a smaller reel (probably better for most clients),a great work horse, easy to cast, and pretty smooth to reel.  Nice thing is you get the Abu quality in a top end reel.  I have seen some deals on these on Ebay lately, there are also quite a few 6600's out there also.

Mike,

For client reels, I would suggest the 6500 C5 Mag's. Thumb bar, and Mag adjustment. Pretty good reel for the money, and is quite smooth. If you want to spend more, then the 6600 Morrum is my favorite. I've had my current Morrums for 4 years now, and have have no problems. Keep them clean and lubed, they last. In fact, I ordered 3 of them today, at 1/2 price!

Garcia is coming out with a C3 that has a thumb bar. It is red, called a SS C3, I think.

I've had a Diawa CVZ for a few years now and love it. Casts very well(long), and eveything is still working smoothly on it. And for what it's worth, you can put a ton of line on it because the spool is much smaller than most reels. I use it for both Muskie and Stripers here out east.

Strongest reel on the market would be the penn 955 and 965. A bit cheaper than a morrum or the calcutta and they won't break. The reels mentioned above are good also but if you are looking for the strongest one, it's the penn.

I have had great success with Ambassadeur 6500C and 6000C reels, from the the 1970s. They will be all silver or all black in color. They are out there if you look. The 6500 CS Rockets are newer, and seem to be as good.

Daiwa Millionaire cv-x's are cheaper than cv-z's but are very smooth. Not much plastic in them either. Much less than shimano or abu reels. The 253a which is a little smaller than a 5600 is only $80. I use mine for everything.

Stay away from high speed c4's. They burn out very quickly. Those gears can't take anything except jerkbaits.

Under your circumstances, my vote goes to the Abu 5500 series C3s without the thumbbar. Lack of a thumbbar means the client is less likely to hit it while setting the hook or fighting the fish. Also, those Abus are SO easy to work on that you can totally tune them up every winter, including replacing gears, pawls, the worm gear, drag washers, etc. During season you can partially strip them down to clean/relube in a jiffy. Last, you troll a lot right? and Garcia now makes that $50 line counter accessory kit you can add to any one of the 5000 series reels. (Never used one of those, but heard very good things.)

And that's all I got to say about that.

Love my Diawa CVZ, cast very smooth and long, I use it mainly for bucktails and topwater. And I use a Ambassador C4 for jerkbaits, works great with the higher gear ratio.

You should try the 6500CS Rocket reels. Im not sure if they are available in US, but here in Sweden, the home of Ambassadeurs, they are the most popular reels for Northen Pike-fishing. This reels are classic Ambassadeurs with dual cast controll caps. They also have special bearings and casts far beyond Calcuttas and Mörrums.

Don't even consider the Abu Line Counter. I bought 2 last spring, installed one, used it one day, and it was off the reel that night. What a pain in the a$$. Not sure how accurate it was, but it was a pain to see the LCD, and the buttons are too small, plus it totally screws up the clicker.

Will never purchase another Garcia reel as they are'nt worth the box they package them in. If you are fishing every day or are an agressive angler that really puts some time on your reel a new Abu cannot and will not go the distance. They cheapened up their deal so much it shows. My last 6
Garcia's I bought...junk. Who cares if a reel casts farther if it's a pile and won't last a few months . That's a sad thing man. Comparing a Morrum to a calcutta is ridiculous man there is no comparison as a calcuuta will
outlast and out perform a garcia any day! Don't really care about all the diehard Abu fans as they are behind a reel that blows. I guess they are okay for clients but geez man can't somebody manufacture a solid piece of equipment already. Reel failure in the boat can be the start of a real bad day sometimes. Washer this and washer that. Garcia ,start building to last
you've made your cash off of us, kick us down a reel that makes us proud!
We may not have to buy 5 of yous to 1 of theirs. Cheers!

Jt the Garcias will last and handle as long as it competitors. I also use Calcuttas and will say that they are superb. The ABU-Garcias reels are a little more rough in handling but the feeling of a Garcia is more genuine. They will last and are very strong and durable.

OK, everyone has an opinion (emphasis on "opinion"). My "opinion" would be the 5600 Morrum. Have beaten mine to death over the last 3 years without a problem. Very solid reel and very durable. I know Cabela's has them for $169 on their site. The 5600 is also a smaller profile which makes it easier on the hands and the thumbar which comes in handy having it where it is.

BTW- Shep, would you like to explain how you got them for half price? cough cough!

Part of the bonus for qualifying for the RCL Finals at Lake Okoboji. Got a goody package with a certificate for 1/2 off on any three Berkley/Garcia products. Figured I might as well go for the high dollar items.

Shep,
Darn, when I won the Bass(minus the "B") Masters tourny I got a coupon for half the clothes off any girl. Man did I get screwed (no pun intended). That was a good deal you got, just thought maybe you found some SUPER website giving them away or something. Thanks.
