Is it effective to use topwater lures in spring? If not, when do you usually start throwing them?

Other than super cold water, never doubt a topwater lure. A lot of people say there's a magical temperature in which topwaters should start and stop being used-- It's just not true. I've had very good luck with slow moving topwaters in the spring and especially the fall. It allows you to fish water that other people don't fish, and gives them a look at something not everyone else is throwing.

a slowly moved zig zag like a weagle can get some good ones in cooler spring temps...
biggest fish in last cpl years in my boat in May came on a zig zag... 47"er.

Done very well on One Eye Willy JR in the spring. Lot of years my first fish and biggest spring fish was on one. Team Rhino has some killer colors of them.

I feel like a topwater actually represents a very easy meal to a muskie. With a warming surface layer in spring, this is a great time to throw topwater. Fishing the warm shallows at sunset in June or July can be deadly. I would be less likely to work the surface though after a cool night or cold-front.

What do you guys consider Spring, exactly? I realize some states have closed seasons. But for me, right now is Spring. Water temps are roughly 50 degrees. Still a good time to throw surface baits?

Good point. I think of June as spring muskie fishing here, water is typically in the 60's.

yes it can work at 50, tho as others have pointed out, it might not be my 1st choice, but never know sometimes a slowly moved weagle can be what they want. if nothing else is working give it a try.

Definitely don't rule out topwater..I've caught dozens in the spring with water in the 50's..many of them are some of the biggest fish in the system, last year March 25th a week after iceout I caught a nice one on top and water had just hit 40! I think anytime conditions bring fish shallow topwater is a good option year round.

I do very well on toppers in spring, very slow tail rotators, to the point of barely plopping just spinning and slow long gliding WTD baits. This has worked for me even when temps are in the 50s.

As others have pointed out, walk-the-dog style topwaters can be quite effective in any water temp and particularly in spring. Sometime a downsized WTD bait can really be the ticket if nothing else is working. Also a crawling-style topwater (hawgwobbler, creeper) can be good, though in colder temps i try to keep the retrieve speed as slow as I can manage.

I've had much less luck with straight-retrieve, prop-style topwaters (topraider, globe) in cold temps in spring...there are always exceptions but it's usually best for the water to warm up a bit for those baits to be most effective, i.e., 65+ degrees.

If they bounce off of the ice then the water is too cold.
