I've been out several times in the past couple weeks and have yet to move a fish on a topwater. By this time last year the fish were clobbering topraiders. Seems like it's been cool enough at night to get things going.

#1, you missed the bite by a week. Second, you're probably fishing too deep. I was POUNDING them over the last 2-1/2 weeks shallow. Tail ploppers only. The bigger the wind the better.

Switch to the 10 Inch, Black/Orange Manta, especially in wind and waves and vary the retrieve from slow swings from side to side with long pauses, to fast twitches as one would walking the Jackpot dog.

I moved 5 muskys last Saturday, with that being the cold front and missed the first two strikes as my head was up my a$$ by not watching the first five seconds of retrieve after splashdown. Two, very big muskies came up top and ate it and spit it faster than you can say ddfenner...

Forget the topwaters.

I was out Saturday morning and didn't do a thing with topwaters and jerk-baits except lots of bonus fish. Switched over to CJs spinner baits and soon had two nice Muskies hammer my bait. I caught the second one which was a very fat 44 inches and the first one was almost as big. I almost had her too, but she hit fast and hard coming towards the boat and I didn't quite get the slack up in time to set the hook. A two +40 inch fish day would have been nice.

I talked to a guy at the PMTT that caught 8 fish on Top Raiders in one day the weekend before. This was in that area, I owe him enough not to give up the lake he told me he caught them on. Go get them, they are ripe for the pickins.

They're still going strong on surface baits as of Sat. evening (70 degree water temps). To me, the best surface bait fishing is yet to come. When the water temps begin to steadily drop from 70 down to 58...look out. Try changing the style of surface bait you are using. They seem to respond much better to some styles than others. I really like a Globe-style bait at this time of year. Something about that thing drives them crazy as the water temps are falling.

Seems to me that you fish alot of east metro. One of my most memorable trips ever was on the Big O during the first week of October a few years back. It was really cold. Had five fish on, all on Globes, just before and just after dark. Caught only two: 45 and 46. The others were just as big, though. The strikes were ferocious. Keep your confidence up.

Mr. Fenner,

Do you have the front hook "T"d on that Manta? Those hooks will hug the bait just like any other round bait and "T"ing those hooks can make a huge difference.

I've replaced the Original hooks On The Manta To Prevent this type of problem.

The last topwater fish from 10 days or so back: Super Top Raider caught the first and raised (twice) the second, and then caught on the Hawg Wobbler.

If you haven't learned to SLOWLY twitch a Hawg Wobbler through the slop of thick cabbage, you need too and wait for the EXPLOSION to happen...

Hawg Wobblers are not just toss back lures, they are the best surface slop topwaters I have ever fished..
