Posts: 43 | I am currently running 2 Hummingbird Onix 10 360 units off of my starting battery. Occasionally my units turn off while starting my big motor. I have a 36 V trolling motor set up with 3 - 31 series batteries . The starting battery is a series 27 deep cycle from Napa. Does anyone use a separate battery for their electronics? any suggestions or ideas to keep my electronics running ? The units stay running while on the trolling motor, and only shut off while starting the main motor. Thank you

Location: Contrarian Island | I run 2 HDS 12s, and occasionally an 8, stereo w 4 speakers and can run my livewell and never have issues... I run a 31 size AGM.. my guess is your 27 size is getting old or just doesn't have the juice a 31 would...if you can fit it just upsize to a 31

Posts: 3480 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | I have had this happen on lowrance units before as well. What I found was to run dedicated wires to the batteries rather than through the electrical system of the boat. For some reason, that isolated the issue. I would concur, though, that it most likely is due to a battery that is starting to arrive at the end of it's life cycle... Steve

Posts: 410 Location: With my son on the water | I had the same issue. I talk to an Interstate Battery rep. He recommended the 27M-XHD, it is the largest Marine Starting Battery Interstate makes and has 182 reserve capacity. From what I recall it's the extra reserve capacity you want for this type of application. I got it for about $100 and the problem has been gone ever since. So I guess it worked!

Location: Contrarian Island | the one I run (Duration AGM) has these specs..pay a bit more for an AGM, but I love the fact they are NO maintenance..never have to worry about fluid levels..I ran one pair of AGMs for 7 yrs with lots of use Specifications Application:Marine, RVs - Deep Cycle / Starting Cold Cranking Amps (CCA):800 Reserve Capacity (RC):200 Group Size: 31 DC Power: 800 CCA Height: 9-3/8" Width: 6-3/4" Length: 12-15/16" Weight: 69 lb Edited by BNelson 2/14/2018 3:52 PM

Posts: 228 Location: Tinley Park, IL | I am having this problem with my Tuffy on my bow unit. I was told by several people that if you run separate wires to the bow from the starting battery it will probably solve the problem. I am going to try this before buying a different battery.

Posts: 546 Location: MN | All of the information provided is good advice. I had the same issue on a boat I bought a few years ago when I was swapping out a 5" for 10" display. It may not come to mind at first, but one culprit can be the factory wiring being too small for the application. Some boats are only rigged with wire that is adequate to carry voltage for smaller units and their lower power draw. Consider running new wires to power these larger units. Many times the wire to our electronics is too small, especially when running long spans, hence the front graph dies first. Consider running 10 or 12 gauge wire for power leads. This will eliminate issues with resistance, which is like friction for electricity and limits the amount of voltage that is transferred from power source to fish finder (electricians, please forgive the crude analogy). This will also eliminate a variable in your issue with your unit dying upon cranking your engine. Most likely you need a larger group 31 battery with good reserve capacity, but the larger wire will help ensure the necessary voltage gets to the units. Do it once, do it right. Location: Grand Rapids, MI | Make sure you have updated with the latest software. This was a problem with many of the Humminbird models. Software updates lowered the voltage required to keep the units from restarting or locking up.

Posts: 43 | Thank you all for your ideas and suggestions. Now that the weather is getting warmer here in northern Illinois, I wish my boat was here so I could get in it and try some of your ideas. Thank you all again, and I can't wait to get back north and try them out.

If you have your sonar wired to the accessory brain box it will not make any difference.

Posts: 770 | If the wires powering your unit are connected past the ignition that could be the problem. I worked my own right from my battery to be safe.

Posts: 135 | These things keep getting more thirsty: fully 2-3x more draw than just 10 years ago. HDS10 g1 = 1.0 amps 1199 = 1.3 amps Onix 10 = 2.5 amps HDS12 g3 w/SS= 2.75 amps Helix 12 g2n SI = 3.0 amps In that same time, the batteries and wiring in most boats have stayed the same - and especially since the cranking battery included in many new boats is small in order to save them money, lots of 27 series out there, even some 24 series. I had a similar issue with my bow unit shutting down when starting the motor - it's farther away so there's loss over the wire that increases the problem. Upsizing my main battery to an AGM 31 took care of it completely. As Will mentioned, the Onix units are notorious for this shut-down, and they have a long start-up cycle so it's a big pain. They did address it with a software update so be sure you're current on that. And when it's said and done, running multiple units with this kind of draw is going to use up more juice, so you might need...more juice. - Check your wires to make sure they're big enough to carry the load efficiently. - Make sure your battery is topped off with fluids, etc. - Consider your total draw through the day, and shut down things you don't need running 2x Onix = 5 amps!, the 360, radio, lights (non-LEDs are one of the biggest draws in your boat), livewell pumps, etc. - Use a main battery with as much reserve capacity as possible. - Napa Marine Starting 27 = 182 minutes @ 25 amps - Napa Marine Dual Purpose 27 = 150 minutes @ 25 amps - Duration AGM Dual Purpose 31 = 200 minutes @ 25 amps (This is what I have, same as listed above by BNelson)
