Posts: 1039 Location: North St. Paul, MN | I'm around 250-275 muskies personally caught. I've only caught a 47, in 2003. I have only netted two 50s in my life...one for my dad and one for the guide I was with. I'd love to get a 50", but like many have said, it's about where you fish. I converted to fishing small rivers about 8 years ago. My enjoyment in musky fishing has soared since doing this. I catch way more muskies and love it...not too concerned if it's a 34 incher or a 41 incher.

Posts: 90 | Awesome stories guys, very fun to read. I agree it really does depend on the waters one is able to fish. I'm fortunate that most of the muskie lakes around hold 50's, even though my pb is low it's always fun knowing the next cast could be a 50+.

Posts: 612 | Have never caught one. I enjoy catching any descent fish. The musky's I-we catch generally vary between (30 to 44)". The only 50+" musky I've ever seen was caught by a friend. He caught it on a small Rapala jig while we were perch fishing in >40 FOW. He only had 6 pound test, no leader. Amazingly he was able to reel the musky in and land it w/o it getting excited, head shaking, jumping or any of the usual antics. We concluded that since he could only apply gentle pressure to nudge the fish in with an undersized rig that he managed to avoid upsetting the fish.

Posts: 343 | It took me 75 fish over 17 years to get my first pure bred 50.5" muskie, I caught wading. Since then I average about 1 50" per hundred or so fish including 2 tigers over 50" with 5 out of the 6 I've caught wade fishing. 2 came from Kentucky, 1 from Tennessee, 1 from Nebraska, and the 2 tigers from Utah.

Pretty impressive to land a 50 in those states let alone just one. Monster tigers too, good work!

Posts: 320 | Somewhere between 100-140 for me for my first 50 which was a 54 I released in IL in 2006. Three others over 50 all from WI including my best WI fish at 52.5" caught last June. I've only fished for muskies in IL & WI. I built a little cabin in WI in 2003 on some WI river flowage water and spend a lot of time there during the season. All three WI 50s came from there. It's lower density water but does have some good fish but you really have to work hard for them.

Posts: 252 | Musky number 118 in 2015 was a 49 and 1/8 inch musky. I was about to turn 50 and I really wanted to catch a 50 incher for my birthday. That 49 incher still made me very happy, but it left me wanting more!! Then, while on vacation this year, I caught #176 which turned into my first musky over 50 inches. It measured 52 and 3/4 inches. Pretty good fish for here in Kentucky. Also had my best day that week number-wise by catching 6 in one day. That was a very fun vacation for me! Still left me wanting more. I guess that's why I'll be out there trolling in the morning at first light.

Posts: 34 | Guess I'm the lucky one, first one was a 53, my second time out! Needless to say I've been bit by the muskie bug pretty hard, but it's taken 4 years since to catch another 50+. Living in central Minnesota greatly increases your chances at a 50" fish if you put your time in.

Posts: 349 | My first (and only) 50 was right around my 50th fish, and I'm close to 100 fish now. Only had 2 missed/lost fish that had a chance at 50, and both were probably 48-49. Definitely not due to fishing "small fish lakes", as I've netted 8 50's in my boat (including my own - fishing solo). I'm just bit by the small fish bug for everything but crappies ![]()

Posts: 253 | It took me (360) before I hit the big 50" mark in 2011. That was (15) years to hit that mark. Lost a couple before then. I am blessed to have (4) so far and hope to get a chance at a few more. The one I lost this year still haunts me !! My Avatar is my first 50 incher by the way. Steve

Posts: 1425 Location: St. Lawrence River | We are lucky to have big fish water up here. We dont run the numbers like other states, but 50's are, lets just say not rare. Ive done 50" fish back to back.. i think it took me 5 fish on the St Lawrence to get 50". (Probably 30 overall)
