Posts: 6 | I have a sling blade and elite 9MH. What real and rod combo would everyone recommend for pulling in buchertail twin 8 and Jr Cowgirl 9's? I use the MH for easy double 8 Colorodo's (shumway flasher) and smaller. Looking for a new real for the slingblade. Strongly prefer Shimano. Tranx 400 30/40", Tranx 500PG/HG, Conquest 30"? I don't throw 10's anymore because of tendonitis in my wrist and elbow when I do for any extended period. So looking for easiest on my body. If I am going to burn I will downsize to make easier. I understand the tranx500 mechanically easiest to retrieve but much heavier on the rod (casting). So which reel do I pick for under 10 double blades? I have very large hands and palm the reel. thx

Location: ontario | Dont have experience with the tranx 400 but a reel to consider is the toro beast in high speed. Its a 6.2:1 brings in 34” per crank and comes with 3 handles. Double paddle, counterweighted cranking handle, and a jigging handle with 3 slot extensions. Bulletproof reel, with the counterweighted handle you can use blades up to 8s with ease. Throw on the extended jigging handle and now you can even throw 10s and only weighs 13.8oz

Posts: 393 | I have Shimano 400 on a sling blade dedicated to midsize and smaller bucktails and it is perfect. Another benefit is that this setup is excellent for crank baits as well.

Posts: 1714 Location: Mt. Zion, IL | For up to 8's, 400HG would be great, 9's really start to get hard to pull. If it were me and you were really wanting to burn double 8's and 9's, I would go 500HG. If burning is not a concern, 400A all day long. I have 4 400A's with the power handle from the HG and they have been flawless. I would stay away from the Beast as I had 5 of them fail in one season. Abu warranted all of them, but it was a pain having to send them in to be replaced so frequently. The new 400's have been absolutely flawless in my boat.

Location: ontario | Find it hard to believe you had 5 fail on you in 1 season. The beast is well built i have 2 and fish with people who have multiple seasons with them and they never had any issues. I would stay away from the tranx 400 because to me its just a bass reel. Lots of guys use it for bass fishing here

Location: ontario | And the beastHS can actually turn 9s with ease unlike the tranx400hg which u said “start to get hard to pull”

Posts: 983 | I agree Dan that is very hard to believe I have 4 beasts with 2 seasons on them both and they function just like day 1...they are built like tanks and your right the 60hs will burn 9s all day long no problem

Posts: 1714 Location: Mt. Zion, IL | Believe what you want, your experience and mine were not the same. I swear by Abu for bass reels and their bass revo reels are the best on the market. The beast did not last in my boat. I always kept the paddle handle on my beasts, never used a jigging or power handle either. My reels were all purchased new and serviced frequently (after about 80 hours of use each time). They just did not hold up to use. My gear is never abused. I'm not arguing a point with someone about a reel you state you have no experience with. "To me" and "don't have any experience with" don't hold water. Lots of guys here use beasts for bass; that does not make it an exclusive "bass reel."

Posts: 60 | For double 8's and smaller blades I use a Shimano Curado 300EJ reel paired with a MH action rod. It comes with a power handle and has 6.9:1 retrieve ratio and is easy to palm the reel. For double 9's, double 10's and larger blades I use a Tranx 500PG reel or it's too much wear & tear on the hands and wrists for me.
