The muskie world lost one of its good guys in the last week. Dave Dawson, d2bucktail here on Muskies First, died from a heart attack at age 54. Dave was a long-time board member of the Muskellunge Club of Wisconsin. He leaves behind a wife and two young sons.

Dave and I were introduced via email over 15 years ago through a mutual acquaintance. We traded fishing and hunting stories over the years, shared spots on Lake of the Woods and Crow, and swapped recipes for venison breakfast sausage. We wrote enough in our messages to recognize kindred spirits in one another. We always said we would fish together when he came to the Twin Cities or I was in Milwaukee, but we never did. Now we won't have the chance, and that makes me truly sad.

RIP, my friend. My deepest condolences to Jane and the boys.

Wow, life is truley short. He isn't the first muskiefirst member to suddenly pass and they are never easy. Very sorry for your loss.

That's sad to hear! We exchanged many emails and talked musky books long ago. He seemed like a great guy and way too young to leave us!

Dave was a great man and an ambassador for our sport. Both of our local muskie clubs will truly miss him, and so will I. Thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and chiildren.

I think what I enjoyed most about many communications with Dave was it was clearly not just about the fishing with him. He took the time to appreciate Canadian sunsets in all their glory and all the goofy stuff that happens while out fishing. Dang, I wish we would have fished together!
