Posts: 199 | Background: We have a 858 si on the console and a 858 sonar/GPS on the front. We want to upgrade to a helix 10 si on the console. The helix 10 si at cabellas in under 1k. Is that good or get a chirp or a gen 2? So many choices. Also do we need to send the transducer in to upgrade or does the 10 come with the hd transducer? Also will the new helix share waypoints with the 858 c on the bow? Thank you

Posts: 251 | The 10 comes with the upgraded transducer. I would get the mega if it's in your budget

Posts: 199 | What's the difference between helix si, chirp, mega, and gen 2. Money is a deciding factor as well. What about this one? http://www.thedigitaloasis.com/Humminbird-HELIX-10-Chirp-Sonar-Colo... Edited by Muskie Gal 8/17/2017 1:17 PM

Posts: 134 | In my experience there are two things you can do when buying a locator. 1. By the biggest screen you can afford, (would mount a 50" if I could) 2. Buy the best technology available (MEGA) If your not concerned with side imaging be above ok, just by a GPS/Sonar unit. There is no comparison to what these new units can do.

I am looking to upgrade next year and after reading all the issues folks have getting the units set up right, with transducers, etc. I am looking at getting it done professionally, even though it costs more. I currently have an older Lawrence GPS/Sonar and the transducer for that. How hard is it install one of the new SI Gen 2 CHIRP helix units and transducers?

Posts: 199 | Does the helix 9 mega come with the hd transducer? Edited by Muskie Gal 8/17/2017 10:13 PM

Posts: 1209 | If the helix 9 is mega it has the best transducer , but I would strongly recomend a 10, the pixels per inch is higher giving a clearer image and it is the same package size. Chirp is a benefit but unless you are really into side imaging mega is not really important. 455 vs 800 vs1200 all have there place but generally 455 is easier to set up and easier to see fish! Seriously 455 si is more than sufficient for 80% of people who use si. I myself am fighting the urges to buy 3 or 4 solix 12's or 15's... there all mega. If money is a concern I would say get a sweet deal on a gen 1 helix 10 si, it will connect to you 898/858, but I would sell both of them and buy a second sweet deal helix 10 gps gen 1. Going this route you should be able to get into them for the same price as a single gen two and keeping your units for now/spare... and they are aging so if your keeping one I'd keep them both

Posts: 1209 | Yes that is gen one, here is a Link to a write up that I just made on a different site, I can not get pictures to 200kb for this site but I just did for the other site... I'm sorry but to view pics you need an account I think. http://www.bbcboards.net/showthread.php?t=841167&p=8658652#post8658... Edited by Fishysam 8/18/2017 9:57 AM

Posts: 546 Location: MN | When getting an SI unit, whether a MEGA or standard, do yourself a favor and get a high speed transducer and a Y-cable that will pair with the included SI or MEGA SI transducer. It allows for high-speed depth readings. The MEGA transducer can then be mounted higher on the transom and is better protected, as long as it is below the water line at idle (SI and DI speeds). The 2D transducer will work as your 2D transducer at all times and will be in good contact with depth and sonar, if mounted properly. Y cable: (HELIX: MSIDB Y #720094-1) SOLIX: SMSIDB Y #720100-1) Fiberglass boats can do a shoot-thru-hull transducer: (HELIX: XP 9 20 #710164-1) (SOLIX: XP 14 20 #710249-1) Aluminum boats need transom mounted transducer (HELIX: XNT 9 20 #710214-1) (SOLIX: XNT 14 20 T #710247-1)

Posts: 199 | We would love to get the mega 10 but the regular helix 10 si is half the price. I would think going from a 858 to a helix 10 would be a huge upgrade anyways.

Well worth the 100 buck expense, and I speak from.experience of believing humingbirds faqs responses that it is possible to get the SI transducer to read on plane.

Posts: 11 | Recently got the Helix 10si Mega and its awesome. I put it on the console and for musky fishing and it's a game changer. You may as well get the best now because something new will be right around the corner. Its worth the extra $$$.

Posts: 133 | Has anyone else running a mega not found that it's way easier to see fish using 455....mega for structure is the best by a long long shot... But man I can sure we fish in the water column alot easier with 455, and I have had 6 humminbird units and tinker with settings quite a bit

Posts: 546 Location: MN | Because you have different frequencies between 455 and MEGA, you may need to adjust sensitivity and contrast when switching between them to truly dial the unit it. MEGA is better off used for tighter scanning widths and 455 for scanning larger swatches of water. Good luck out there!

Posts: 133 | Ya I tinker with it lots... But I have not been able to make mega as good at seeing fish as 455...not even close really.... I change range, contrast, sensitivity constantly because different settings are need constantly. I have not been able to make fish pop out with mega like the 455 does. But like I said it's night and day as far as structure scanning

Posts: 1760 Location: new richmond, wi. & isle, mn | If you're running the mega si transducer, tilt it forward a good 15 to 20°'s.Turn your sensitivity way down. I love it, and I've been a lowrance guy for many years. Still like the waypoints management of lowrance. For now I'll keep the best of both in my boat.
