Why is looking at the eclipse different than just looking up at the sun on a sunny day?

I'm sure that over the course of the year i look up at the sun many times yet they tell you that you need special eclipse glasses about the equivalent to a welders mask to prevent eye damage.

I seem to remember viewing an eclipse at school 60 odd years ago and they gave us a few layers of photo negatives to look through.

It's not any different, read something on a gentleman looked at eclipse briefly and is partially blind from it doctors say not any different than looking at it today or any other day. You will do retinal damage with or without an eclipse.

ON ANOTHER NOTE who is going fishing that morning and during the eclipse???? Want to know how the fish will react, more active etc... Nobody wants to to take off of work to go. So once again boatless and no partner for this experiment!!!

I never seen a fish. Not a bird in the sky during the entire eclipse where I was. It was mostly flat calm and baitfish were busting the surface but that was the only sign of life

I think it becuase it is a time when people stare at it. People do not normally stare at the sun. I was listening to a story about eye injuries suffered by staring at the eclipse without eye protection. The doctor said in many instances they could tell at what point the eclipse was at by the shape of the scarring.

I'm surprised people didn't have much success musky fishing. I figured it would be amazing. Good thing tho because I was stuck at work thinking about it all day.

I forgot about the eclipse today... walked out to the work truck and felt rain so I looked up for cloud coverage and saw a quarter of the sun gone by the moon. Man am I dumb sometimes!

Was having trouble deciding whether to fish for muskies or river striper during the eclipse. Decided to go striper fishing and caught two. When it got dark, we heard roosters crowing and then when the sun got brighter, the turkeys went crazy.

Moon passes in front of the sun, covering it partially.... your eyes dilate more then just looking at the full sun....hence you are more absorbing more of the suns rays=bad

Pulled in to Cass Lake yesterday after driving all day on Monday during the eclipse. One of the locals came over while I was docking and proceeded to tell me what the heck I had just missed. He said the time surrounding the event was just crazy, boating a couple of beauties and having all sorts of action from others. Here is the explanation! When you are catching fish, they are biting, and when you're not, it's because they are not biting. Naturally, that's not true. Lots of fish are caught while I'm getting skunked. Sadly it's pretty much every event I've entered lately, but the smiles from those with the trophies prove the fish WERE biting. You just have to keep on chucking until it's you. Then you can tell everyone how good they were biting that day.

Lorie; A bit tardy on your request....But Yes, next time there is an eclipse, look at all 4 moon positions, if eclipse is occurring at the same time as one of the 4, take off work and get your Butt out there. ( hopefully no hooks in Butt;)

I had a hunch, moon overhead/Eclipse occurring at the same time here, this location, that there was a good bite about to occur.

 I started fishing at 11:35am, by 12:25pm , boated 4, then by 3:00 pm boated seven....6 musky, 1 pike.

Now, wish I had started more like 10:30am....;(       could of fished with Me....what would Gene say;)?  Also talked with 2 other boats, they also had good action most of the day!

I think the fish on Vermilion stared at the eclipse and then couldn't see to bite the rest of the week.
