A boat partner and you are on an annual fishing trip. Your casting one bait pretty much the whole time. Any time you have any action on it he immediately puts on the same bait for the next few spots and casts it in front of you. Is that right or wrong?

Sounds very ammature. I'm no pro but I have tons of time on the water. I personally wouldn't do that. I fish out the back of my buddies boat from time to time and I just try to hit peices of the structure he hasn't hit. Seen way way to many fish get caught fron the guy in the back to waste my time trying to cast all the way past the guy in the front. Nothing wrong with putting on the same lure if it's a well establised pattern. But just seeing one fish that didn't eat certainly no need to all be throwing the same bait. Just tell your bro to stay in his lane!

no need for cutting you off. same bait is fine. casting in front of you not so cool
working together as a team you move and catch more fish

Sounds like he cannot handle being outfished. It happens once in awhile but when somebody casts in front of me i bring it up on the spot. Don't do so in an ignorant and confrontational manner, make fun of them and make it seem stupid.

I agree with Todd say something in joking manner but they get the point...Same bait maybe ok if there a pattern but only switching when raising a fish lil amature...I also agree with seeing too many fish missed from guys in front of boat or maybe just needed to see a different bait.....But casting in front no way def say something..

Rule in my boat is that if a fish is caught on a particular bait, it's up for grabs.
Anyone can claim it until everyone fishing has boated at least 1.

It's funny when the bait is grabbed by someone else and the person it was grabbed from catches another one on something else. Especially when you just switch rods.

This happened a few weeks ago, I got a 43" on a jerk bait. My daughter grabbed the rod/lure invoking the 1 fish rule. I took her bucktail/rod and 100 yards later stuck a 45". Thought I was gonna get smacked...

You could mention coordinating your casts so each guy gets new water on alternate casts. If you time your casts and allow the guy in back to cast in front of you, you can both cast new water each cast. If I run the boat from the back I often work it out so we're doing this. If I'm in the front I encourage the back person to do the same.

Let him know that on many occasions I've caught fish after another boat has moved thru an area/spot! It's not always the first bait/cast thru that takes the fish. Hard to fathom but it's true.

Talk to him gently but-- firmly!!

I'd say the only time this is acceptable is when a solid pattern has been established. I've been blessed with some good boat partners and all of which are good about trying different stuff. I usually stick with the last trips pattern while the angler in the front of the boat tries new stuff on new water until we've started to get an idea of what they want or we both get frustrated to the point of contracting boxitis (the disease of changing lures every 10 casts). That's our method, and thus far its working out well. But for a dude to try to snake you off of a fish you moved is kinda BS.

Too many variables,,,how good a friend's?? Annual trip means this only happen once a year not all season??
You take the good with the bad in friendships is the fish more important or the buddy?? Maybe you just put up with it for a week if he's the type of person who would be offended-you know better he doesn't.

Live with your buddy's faults,,confront,or move on,, I wish I could haul off and kick mine when I'm in a cabin and they are All Snoring All Night long,,but the other 16 hrs a day I enjoy them.

If I'm in front and the guy in back throws in front of me, I make a little joke about it and then throw behind him. They'll get the point. However, as the guy in front of the boat, I am conscience enough to space out my casts so that the guy in the back of the boat has "fresh" water to fish. I usually get out-fished from the guy in the back.

That would drive me nuts, would have to come up with a solution. Maybe let him run the front of the boat for a few spots and come to a friendly agreement

I like fishing from the back, and typically do when someone else is in my boat. When someone in front switches to what I'm throwing, I change to a complimentary bait. If they switch because I moved/caught a fish, then I stay with the same bait but start moving the boat faster to cover more water. Your boat partner sounds like a parasite, and I think the best option is usually to keep your bait on and just move the boat faster, placing your casts in-between his.

I'm usually clipping along at .8-1mph so there's no need to try to throw ahead like that under any circumstance. anyone new out I just explain to them how you maximize your efficiency with 2 or 3 guys before we start and correct them along the way. People that i fish with often already know this, as it's pretty basic stuff. But if no one ever tells them, they'll never learn.

I don't mind the switching baits... but, you can definitely tell them that there is plenty of water for him to not cast directly in front of you.

I'm honestly more perturbed about someone running the boat too fast than I am about them casting in front of me. Hate trying to work a glidebait when someone else is running blades. As far as copying my lure, that's giving up on their part. Point and laugh like Nelson on the Simpsons.

It's fishing, enjoy it. Don't sweat the small stuff.

Now, if he changes baits every 5 minutes. Drop him off at an island and leave him there.

I would agree on spacing out casts...

I also would make sure that if going at a certain rate, you are using baits of similar speed..

I usually try to swap ends with a boat partner so he gets time up front for first water...let them run the bow mount for a while. Many appreciate it. That if in my boat. I've been in one boat where he fished so slow he was hitting a new cast every 3 - 5 feet... and would not even consider changing speed or swapping ends... he fished for himself and not as a team. I no longer fish with that person. Same kind of guy who would ask for your thoughts on where to go just to appease you then do what he wanted to anyway...

Curleytail said it best.
When fishing with a partner or guide you work as a team.
Fish multiple patterns and baits until a solid pattern is achieved.
Then keep the boat going at a pace where everyone gets new water casting. The guy in the front keeps casting far enough ahead to give the next guy in line fresh water also. Work as a team!!

I don't see a problem with him switching baits. He should be a little more considerate about casting in front of you. I know some guys in the back of the boat think the only guy that has a chance to catch fish is the guy in front so they try and get their bait in there first. I would have a conversation, or if you don't want to do that, cast out when he is in the middle of his return and that way you guys don't have conflict of two casts going to the same spot.
