Posts: 612 | I hear of a lot of guys getting fish close-in: figure 8's, boatside, etc.... I've found by and far the best fights I've experienced have come from fish that hit > 10" from the boat while casting. Not saying this is where I always get the fish on. Edited by NPike 7/24/2017 4:42 PM

Posts: 133 | Seeing a big fish come ripping in behind a bait is part of the appeal to me. Love catching fish far out on the cast but I'm not sure watching a big 50" class fish pushing wake behind the bait is hard to beat. I'm not in it for the fight. I'm in it for putting big fish in the boat

Posts: 20219 Location: oswego, il | I try and keep my baits farther away from the boat than 10 inches but you cannot beat a boatside strike. My favorites are ones that come out of nowhere and smash it and those that you really worked hard to finally get to eat.

Posts: 119 | Everyone has their own opinion of the most fun fish but I tend to agree that I like the ones that hit on a long cast and then proceed to throw the kitchen sink at you to try to evade the net. Jumps, gator rolls, drag peeling off - those are my favorite.

Posts: 43 | If I had a choice I would prefer a fish that hits at the end of a cast almost as soon as the bait hits the water. One of my favorite all time strikes was a 51 incher that hit my medussa like a freight train on the very first pull. But when muskie fishing I will take a strike any way I can get it.

Posts: 1425 Location: St. Lawrence River | My biggest couple fish have been on bucktails and have hit farther out up on the piece i was casting. Both my partner and I's PB fish both came on the same spot, one week apart, 5 minutes of eachother, on virtually same bait.. The most exciting fishing for me is definitely throwing blades at turned up fish, late evening into dark. Have had a couple real nice fish hit boatside this year and a couple in the 8, in the pitch black. That never gets old. What a rush. Edited by JakeStCroixSkis 7/24/2017 6:57 PM

Location: Contrarian Island | hard to pick one of these: *seeing a big wake roll up behind your topwater way out and playing cat and mouse to get her to eat * looking up and seeing a big 50+ tickling the back of your bucktail with the wiggle in her tail, taking her into the 8 and watching her chow it *getting blasted in the L at night not even knowing the fish was there

Posts: 343 | I prefer they hit early in the retrieve, but my biggest muskie hit my topwater at my feet (I was wading) in pitch black conditions and nearly gave me a heart attack. Also pretty cool when I caught a 49.5 on a Double Cowgirl on the eight after the fish had followed 5 different baits a total of 7 times, before whacking my Cowgirl on the first turn of my figure eight. So I guess it is harder to choose than I thought.

Posts: 99 Location: Tulsa, OK | I would say I feel like you earned the fish a little more when you convert in the figure 8 vs hitting out on the cast. I really don't have a preference, whatever way I can put one in the boat is good for me. Figure 8s can get depressing too when you can't get them to hit.

Posts: 2327 Location: Chisholm, MN | Any time a 50 munches works for me! One of my all time favorite catches was when a heavy 49 swiped me way out, but actually followed in the rest of the way. She hung back a little just watching me do the 8, and as I hung it in her face she exploded on it. I snapped my rod on the hookset, but she made it to the net!

Posts: 386 | I love marking fish while trolling and depending on how much line I have out, being able to count down when the rod goes off. Pretty cool to call it like that. My absolute favorite is reeling in a topwater after dark and having them eat when I stop the bait 10' out. But in all honesty they are all pretty fun.

Posts: 841 Location: Southwest PA | I guess I could be considered am equal opportunity muskie fisherman as I enjoy them all, but the anticipation of a topwater strike is second to none. Believe me, the anticipation is all I've experienced so I couldn't imagine the satisfaction that comes with a blow up!

Posts: 3147 | First foot of retrieve,,has many jumps has possible 3 long runs where I'm just hanging on fish is in charge,,boatside good look,,and in a perfect world I would love to have them throw the hooks so I don't have to mess with them,, #### the picture "I want a live in the moment fight" not worry about a scrapbook memory.

Posts: 390 | Im a sucker for boatside, there are all fun but there is nothing better than converting a lazy follow to an active strike... well except for maybe the one that comes out of nowhere and surprises the !#%$ out of you...well except maybe a full on topwater explosions... conclusion: muskies are fun! Posts: 1425 Location: St. Lawrence River | Naturally as we night fish a lot, i just love the sound of one hitting a bait in the dark in the L when you cant see it coming. You can almost hear the size. You just know if its a tank by the sheer volume. I love it.

X2 on calling your shot when you see them on the electronics (we say target acquired), and it’s kind of fun to drag only the outside boards through the G spot and say; “keep an eye on those board rods”… but that's kind of just showing off. I'm pretty partial to watching a hooked giant do their thing around the boat in gin clear water, and it’s certainly hard to beat a vicious top water strike whether it be casting or trolling. However, far away the most fun for me has been boating doubleheaders trolling solo.

Posts: 580 | No bigger adrenaline rush for me than a 50+ eating in the 8. Love it when you see a big blonde one pop up behind the bait early in the retrieve, you speed it up and, sure enough, she closes the gap....there's a brief moment in time right about then when you just know that if you play it right, she'll eat it in the 8. The world stands still....Nothing beats it.
