Posts: 20229 Location: oswego, il | I have had some big ones eat musky baits, never had one let me hold it without going ape #*#*. No good way to grab them, those scales are like bone and don't give. Congrats on the catch!

Posts: 841 Location: Southwest PA | Man, what a dandy! Congrats to your little guy bud! We're you targeting them by chance? I've heard frayed nylon line works, but have never really wanted to target gar. Did the fish fish fight at all? Sorry if im asking too many questions, just really interested in this. Posts: 735 Location: Apparently where the Muskie aren't | Congrats! What did you catch that on? I bass fish a lake that has tons of them but I can't get them to stay on. They bite little rooster tails almost every other cast but I can't keep them on for more than 10 seconds. They bite it, I set the hook, and next thing I know there is a 3 foot steel coated fish with a saw for a nose flying in the air and fighting like you wouldn't believe. Those fish are nuts, they will jump three times before you know your even hooked. I have heard the rope method and might try that but I'd rather catch them with hooks so I can realeas them easier (even though I think they can survive outside of water for a long time). What did you use, lures, bait? What kind of rod? I would like to eat one I hear they are good, but you need bolt cutter to clean them.

Posts: 770 | We were casting for northerns when i saw a bunch a few of them floating around. I took one of my spinning rods and tied on a steel leader and hooked on a single small panfish hook. I had a small minnow body twistertail similar to what you would use for crappies and threaded that onto the hook. Then we started sight fishing them. After loosing 3 of them i changed my game plan. After i got one to hit i let the line slack and gave them about 5 seconds to get the bait into their mouth, rather the it being way out on their beak. I think the key is your hook set angle. If we didnt set the hook back into the fish we would loose them right away. Small bait and set the hook into the fish is what made it happen for us. Oh and those things are fighting.machines.... like bringing in a torpedo!

Posts: 343 | Very nice catch young man, I use to catch gar once and awhile in Kentucky Lake while pickerel fishing, but none as big as your's. I even saw an albino gar there once, tried very hard to catch it, with no success, was an awesome sight to see.
