Any advice would be appreciated.

I use 25 lb. trilene XT and never have a problem. 20ft. Max line out. Seems to have to much stretch around there for good hook sets.

no mono for propwash, use monel or braid only.the point is to use less line out possible for precision ,with mono it's almost twice the line out for the same depth

Lots of guys troll with Mono with smaller cranks and what not so there is a lil stretch in the line for Hook set so you dont break the Lip off or something along those Line...20-30lb big game mono will work well for trolling....I reinforce my smaller cranks with a strong glue or a Pin and I use Braid to troll but to each their own

20 pound mono?are you fishing for musky or walleye, you know how long fight are bad for musky no?if the guy is fishing at a place with decent fish he should never use something like that.anyway a line stretch is the very last thing you want if you want the hook to do the job in that mouth full of bones if he fish place where a 30 inch fish is a decent fish that's another story i guess.

I have used 20# big game in the past, got some good fish on it to. It worked fine.

Supertrollr, is a hard pulling but short fight any worse than a light fight that lasts longer? Would you be more winded if you ran as fast as you could for 20 seconds, or lightly jogged for a minute? My point is trying to generalize an angler fighting a fish cant be done, to many factors to take into an account. So IMO trying to use that to shoe horn your line preference seems silly.

Something else to consider I know people who have had musky die on striking a trolling bait at 5mph using braid the fish broke its neck. So really if people are concerned with the safety of the fish they should not fish for them. Most everyone tries their best to do what they feel is correct in term of minimizing the damage.

with all of this I no longer use mono trolling, however if someone wants to i will support their decision.

there are trolling lures that would break 20 pound mono...people who BASS fish in heavy cover us 20 pound...
i would not trust 20 pound mono with any trolling bait or musky.
I troll 40 and 50 pound in the prop wash and or short line and do well.

Tomcat I understand the point your trying to make, I do have a question. What baits are you referring to that would break 20# but not take drag on the reel?

you can't troll a bait while it's taking out drag (for more than a minute, you'll get spooled)...so i dont understand why that matters.
I would say an Elzinga, Parrywinkle, and maybe a Plow could break the line.

Edit: i think i understand your question now. none. a bait that can break bass fishing line would take drag, unless you had it locked down until the line broke.

but..i'm reminded why i took a 5 year break from these forums.

IMO braid is best for short lining for reasons mentioned above. Mono is good for planner board fishing and also mast system trolling due to the amount of line out and for the clips. When I use mono, it is 40# big game. Braid is 80 lb.

exactly all about having equipment set up properly...I dont use 20lb mono but when an old timer been muskie fishing for 40 years and thats all he has used and has 100s mroe fish in the boat than I Im gonna atleast listen carefully...what he said makes since...using bagley Monster shads from the 70s you use 80lb braid on this trolling and a big girl strikes you wont even have time to find out the lure will snap at the Lip sometimes even when reinforced...20lb mono gives a lil stretch your trolling not enough stretch to lose fish there is always pressure plus you not gonna get every one ever time to each his own...I dont use the 20ln mono dont use any mono but Im not gonna argue with an old timer trying to help me who has been doing it longer than ive been alive just My opinion

I used 20lb mono for a few years trolling and with suckers too. I was not on the st Lawrence trolling giant crankbaits. It is relative to where you fish. I was in illinois. Never had an issue but i have graduated to 80lb braid.

Well boys I run the mono because some small baits (boss shads and 4" bakers, to name a couple) blow out on a 6' lead using braid and run fine on the mono. No longer fights, good hook sets, and nothing different than braid except it stays in the water and catches fish for me. When you get some baits close to that prop wash strange things happen.

I seem to recall Doug Johnson wrote an article for in fisherman about late season trolling on lotw and he recommended 100# braid or 30# mono. At least that's what I recall l

imo if you fish at states like il,oh,in,where large mouth bass are bigger than musky you can use almost everything you want, but if you are like me and fish in the great lakes or Lawrence river tributaries do like the pro like lazarus, and the guy from georgian bay like dalakis, mills.

I run 50# Sunline Supernatural mono for most, it's the same diameter as 30# Big Game. For big baits I use 80# braid.

My big fish last year came on 25lb test mono running on a short set. The fish was 51-26 in and tipped the scale over 43lbs, Not a long fight considering I was fishing solo. This is not the first giant I've taken on mono and I hope it's not the last. On a side note I've never been broken off on 25 mono yet and I've used it well over 30yrs on my short line sets.(less than 20ft}
