I recently tried somebody's discontinued sportsmans rain coat,,it wasn't a jacket but a full length rain coat,,talk about more rain proof!! I have gouidewear, gander mountain guides choice and frog toggs all work good but are jackets. But the trench style is so much more efficient. Flowing all the way down to your knees and away from your mid section it acts like a rain gutter quickly diverting the water and when you sit down in the rain it covers your thighs when moving,,I'm sold,,does anybody know of a outdoor mfg er who makes a hooded model in the full length trench style???

I don't like them because they're bad about snagging on things as you move about the boat

I believe ToddM has a big collection, and i doubt any have actually been used in the rain.

Galeton (www.galeton.com) makes a few different types/lengths. Not high tech fabrics, but very waterproof PVC coated stuff.

This is a good question?

The first time I went to Alaska on a Moose hunt I had the high dollar gortex stuff. But the problem I encountered was the sweat made the lining wet. It was impossible to dry out in damp 30 degree weather in a tent

When we were flying out the pilot recommended 3/4 length Helly Hansen rain gear so I that is what I got for my next 3 trips. My original 3/4 H & H lasted 12 years. On a hunt, throw on hip boots and you are 100% dry.

I then started using it for fishing and it again worked very well. Ya, you will sweat but I think you always will in the summer no matter what kind of rain gear you have. Being 100% rubber or synthetic it will not absorb moisture so you simply turn it inside out and it is dry.

Now here is the bad part of the new stuff. Some designer decided to add a vent in the back with a flap that is too small. With my old one I would stay so dry all day, but with the new one in tough conditions water works its way into the vent and I have gotten a wet back. (WHO DESIGNS SOME OF THIS STUFF & WHO TESTS IT?) Glad you posted this as it is a reminder to take some shoe goo, contact cement, or RTV and glue the flap down before the season is in full swing.

But I love the 3/4 length and the H&H is a good product that costs about $90.

Have a good day.

Good post and information!  I've been needing to replace the 4x PVC raincoat that I use over my Gore-Tex when it rains heavy. Just ordered this long PVC raincoat for $30.

Yep, i have one! Use it for halloween. Funny thing the reaction i get now vs when i was in my early 20's. Right now i am developing a rain proof romper for a major clothing company.

I was just up in SE Alaska, where my sister and her husband live "off grid" right on an inlet by Icy Straits. She has lived in Alaska for over 35 years, much of it in remote locations. She swears by her 3/4, knee length jacket. She wears it with the traditional high rubber boots everyone there seems to wear. She doesn't like bibs because they get warm when you are working.

I love my 3/4 length LL Bean rain parka for canoeing. No more wet butt!! Everything Happy said is good about long rain parkas is true. The Bean ones used to be Gore-Tex XCR (extreme comfort range). Now they are Tek 2.5, which I assume is a Gore-Tex knock-off. I have not tried the Tek 2.5 version; my old Gore-Tex one is still going strong. They are $89. https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/68420?feat=593-GN1&page=trail-model-...

Thanks for all the info and sources from everyone. Guys if you haven't tried this style do it even if you have to borrow somebody's London Fog. You will see the advantages.

"Wa-tassh" as we call it has always been an issue for me... seems seat water always soaks through my Gore-Tex after a while.  I have PVC shorts that I wear under my Gore-Tex, and plastic bags to cover the seats... and these work good provided I break them out early enough, hoping sitting on the trench coat helps when I don't.
