Location: Apparently where the Muskie aren't | I'm getting a diawa saltiest for trolling to pair up with a TDR but I don't know what size I should get. I've never seen the reel in person so I'm not sure how the sizing works. Thanks!
Also, how important is a line counter? |

Location: Minnesota | Look at a shimano tekota. Line counter is nice helps for depth if you catch a fish easy to get back to the same depth |

Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | Get two Okuma Magdas or Convectors (if you feel like you need to get blingy-er) in size 30. Each are under $90 per, are super reliable and trolling reels do not NEED to be super sexy nice. I have a mixed bag of around 20 of them and in 14 years of use, only 2 have broken down from anything but user error (yeah, I slipped and sat on one). |

Location: Apparently where the Muskie aren't | What size should I go if I was to look at the tekota's? 600? I might run through cabelas tomorrow and take a look at those, convectors and maybe the diawa sea lines because those were also mentioned to me. |

I think it's great for trolling; only negative would be price, but it's in the same range as Tekotas. Linecounter depends on how much you plan to troll. There's methods to know line out other than using a linecounter... You can use a metered braid like PP depth hunter or count levelwind revolutions on a non disengaging reel... Most all telling reels we'll have a non disengaging levelwind. If you go with a non LC reel then it can do double duty as a back up for when one of your casting reels needs repair. |

Location: Grand Rapids, MI | The drawback to the Saltist as a trolling reel is the high gear ratio, it's a bullet proof reel but would be best with a 4:1 ratio. Cleaning baits while the boat is moving is a pain with a high gear ratio, make them big baits with big lips and it really sucks. First choice would be a Sealine 47LC second would be a Convector 30D. |

I didnt say i wouldnt use a saltist to troll. I just wouldnt buy one as a troll specific reel... Any reel can be used to troll. I like Okuma Convectors in 30 size, and Garcia 6500lc for my trolling.. Shimano Tekota 600 is a tank. Okuma Coldwaters look pretty decent as well.
It is a pain in the balls to pull baits in at trolling speed to clean them. So get something low geared. |

Location: Apparently where the Muskie aren't | Thanks guys. The whole cleaning baits thing kind of just slipped past my mind. Looked at the convectors and sea lines a couple hours ago and like them. Just have to decide which one now. Also noticed there is two types of diawa sea lines. There is one that is blue and another one that is orange. Don't remember the exact names but they were both sea lines. They looked similar too. What's the difference between them? |

Location: Northern Illinois | The difference is the number of ball bearings. You need a reel with at least 2. I have used the Sealine SG27LC's for several years (2 BB) and caught many fish with them. The 47's are a little bigger and absolutely would need for mono, but I troll with braid so the 27's are just right for me. Walleye guys use them too. |
