I do keep right on going- in fact I just bought some rain pants last night so that I can do it better, longer, and more effectively (comfortably). I love the rain! In my limited experience I think I notice a slowdown after its been droppin for a while- but I don't have enough evidence to back that. So I plan on NEVER quitting due only to rain- but I personally enjoy the rain/hate the sun too. Good luck- by the way all raingear was on sale at my local Gander.

I always keep on fishing like a fool, but have never had any luck during a down pour, but have had luck right before a storm, that's my favorite time to fish.

Hi,

I have never caught anything in a downpour. But I do know one thing. If you leave you will NEVER catch anything. Keep fishing. You never know what's going to happen.

Good luck,
Brian

I stay through the rain and dont usually catch much during the downpour, but I like that time when/if the rain stops and the water clams!Have had excellent top-water bites at these times, anytime mid-day,morning or evening. It pays to wait it out if it can be done SAFELY! Good luck Jeff []

I have had some good success during downpours, without lightning of course, on both topwater (believe it or not!),
and Slammer Crankbaits.
While using the crankbaits, I had to bring the bait up in the "shadow" of the boat where the rain wasn't hitting the water to see the follows. This particular time was a warm front "all day" rain with off and on periods of heavy rain. I boated 6 muskies that day.
There wasn't much wind during my best occurances.
Get the best raingear that you can possibly afford. Saving a few bucks is soon forgotten when the rain is running down your back in 40 degree weather!

Hi,
One day it was nice and sunny and lost a 45incher that hit boatside. We had two boats out, and a few hours later, one boat one to go in. So we all went in and had a sandwich. Just as they left, it started to sprinkle. I told my friend that we should go after the one I lost. By the time we got to the spot, 5 min., it was downpouring bigtime. The other boat said they could only drive 25mph home due to the rain. Anyway, after a couple minutes of fishing, my friend had the fish hit and miss his bucktail. The thing I learned, don't go to a topwater during a heavy downpour. Maybe it will work, but it didn't then.

Have had great luck just before and early during the storm. The bigger the storm the better, especially if it has been nice out beforehand. We won't fish if there's lightning nearby, but if it's a ways off we'll fish for a while. We won a tournament with a fish caught during a major storm and it was rain so hard you couldn't see the other side of the bay. The people at the registration station thought we were coming in because of the rain, most of the others had quit. By the way another boat came in at the same time we did with a fish too. Can't catch 'em if you ain't fish'n, but alway be smart- saftey first.

Like most of you I prefer it right before the storm and just after the rain came through, but before the north winds pick up and the sky start to clear out. From then on the fishing for me gets real tough for a while. As far as during a hard down pour I seem to struggle and have a tough time catching fish. As long as there is no lightning out I usually stay out on the water however.

The nice thing about storms is on a majority of those times you are the only boat on the water. You don't have to worry about anybody cutting you off and casting your favorite spot. Also, I love it on a really hot day when it starts pouring because it cools things down and the fish become more active.

the only time I leave the water or stop fishing is if there is lightning (graphite rods are like magnets for those things so put your rods down then and quit fishing), if I fish a spot with heavy boating traffic and it's so foggy you can't see a thing or if the winds are just too strong and we feel unsafe. But other than that nothing keeps me from the water. (Got a bad reputation for that with my fishing buddies' wifes!! LOL)

But that said, I never had good success DURING a downpour, only immediately AFTER a downpour. That seems to turn the fish on.

Like most everyone else here I don't get near the time on the water I'd like to so I'm not that picky about the weather. As long as there's not lightning, I'm going if I have the chance. My sucess has been hot sometimes and cold others, but usually at some time there is activity. May be before the rain, during a brief let-up, right after the weather clears or during the worst part of it. You never know, so I just fish. One time that sticks in my mind was when my dogs were with me. They really wanted to go so I took them along, but after about an hour they were both ticked. I ended up catching one 36"er, but the payback for all of the times they got mud all over my house was much better than catching the fish. They still won the battle. The car ride home sucked for me. It's very uncool to have two 130 lb. wet, hairy dogs in your car for an hour.
