Posts: 735 Location: Apparently where the Muskie aren't | We had plans of getting boat from the cabelas in Hammond Indiana but something happened (long story). But anyway there is another boat just like it in minnesota. The inly difference was this one was a different color (I don't care about color) and it had vynal instead of carpet. I've always had carpet and I wanted to know what you guys thought was better. Now that you understand my situation I'll organize my questions below. This is in the general discussion because I have questions about a lot and don't want to make multiple threads 1. Vynal vs. carpet? 2. If I'm going to be in MN your darn sure I'm going to fish. Where are some good places to toss a line in the Minneapolis area? I'd like to fish walleye or smallmouth. 3. Just give me any tips you have on the boat or fishing. I'm open to everything and need some help. Thanks everybody!

Thanks, good to know, almost forget about seasons when fishing in Illinois. I should be ok to fish for the eyes but I won't be able to fish for the smallmouth.

Posts: 391 | You can target bass on May 13th as well. C&R until the 27th. Also the border waters open a little earlier such as the St Croix and mississippi. http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/fishmn/regs.html?topic=inland%A7ion=seao... . I'm sure you've done you're homework already, but having an entirely carpeted boat, I can say that if I can ever afford to buy a new boat, I'm going with at least a vinyl cockpit. Very tired of vacuuming.

Very tired of vacuuming. Thanks for clearing the fishing seasons up. I should have mentioned I have no intention to keep any fish. Just a little something to do while there. And yes, I defiantly get your point about not having to vacuum. Sand gets caught in the carpet and is a pain in the nice try to get out. So it seems like there really isn't to many down sides to vynal. I've never fishing in a boat that has it but I assume it doesn't get crazy hot right?

Posts: 391 | Carpeting is more comfortable if you need a power nap or the wife wants to sun bathe. Also, the storage compartments don't slam shut with as much noise and they stay shut a little better (don't bounce around when driving in rougher water). Going to make more noise walking around too. Just like carpet, if you stick with a lighter color it won't get too hot. I have a navy blue carpet in my rig and on those intense days I don't enjoy stepping on it barefoot. The boat I was on in HI had a white vinyl floor and I walked on that barefoot all day with no problems. Bright sunshiny day, but only in the 80s. If you do go with vinyl Throught the boat, I would also definitely look into some anti-fatigue mats. I know a lot of dudes use them even with carpet but I imagine they would be even more of a trip saver with vinyl floors. Edited by FlyPiker 4/13/2017 12:48 AM

Posts: 444 | Pool 2, Mississippi between St Paul and Mpls is open year round, cpr only for walleye and small mouth. With the rain and warm weather here they should be turning on soon.

Posts: 815 Location: Waukee, IA | I went with a vinyl floor in the cockpit and carpet on the casting decks. I saw it as a good compromise between comfort and ease of cleaning.

Location: MN | 1. Vinyl is the way to go. 2. Mississippi is the only place I know of worth fishing for walleye or smallmouth in the cities. It's also a good place to mark up your new boat if you aren't familiar with it. Head a little north to Mille Lacs for great CPR fishing eyes and smallies. 3. Don't use a bass rod for muskies if you are fishing for big muskies. That may have been covered earlier. ![]()

Posts: 55 Location: Coon Rapids, MN | I have vinyl in the cockpit and carpet on the back deck and bow and would not go back to a full carpet boat. Lot nicer to clean up the vinyl.

Posts: 735 Location: Apparently where the Muskie aren't | I just got some more photos of the boat from the guy at the MN cabelas. It has vynal decks (front and back) and a vynal floor. It has carpet on the walls/sides and on the parts on the side where the rod locker cabinets are (not sure what they are called). I thunk my final question on this is does anyone have any problems with vynal getting slippery. Does ice build up on it really bad?

Posts: 22 | Two things. First if your going to buy a boat from cabela's I would warn you about the trails and tribulations with that. I know two people that have bought boats from them and neither was a good experience. First when there is any issue with the boat they will send it out to manufactures dealer for work. Those boats go to the bottom of the lines and are gotten to when they have time costing you time without a boat. Second they do there own rigging of electrical and electronics. My sister boat a boat from them 2 yrs ago. They have had electrical fires in the boat and many other issues electrically. Her boat has spent just as much time in repairs as it has on the water. It took them a month to find a lighting issue and return the boat to them. Second guy is having a similar experience. On the carpet vs vinyl thing.... My boat has vinyl. Vinyl doesn't stain when you spill your favorite beverage on the floor or when that fish decides to bleed all over your boat. I don't need to vacuum just spray her down and I'm done. The sun doesnt heat it up any more than carpet and it has great traction for those wet days. Will never do carpet again. Just my 2c

Posts: 8826 | Fish out of both. A LOT. I still prefer carpeting. A bit more work to clean, but if you have a shop vac and a sunny spot, or a garage where you can leave it uncovered it dries in no time.
