Thinking about buying a boat from out of state and bringing it back to minnesota. I was wondering about registering the trailer. I was told for a tandem axle trailer like a ranger you pay a small fee and then 6.7% of the cost of the trailer in top if that. So my question is how do you know what the trailer is worth? What's stopping people from saying it's only worth 1000 bucks? Most of the cost of buying a setup is boat and motor correct?

Well the state holds the right to make you pay taxes on nada value if your price is to far off or you don't have a good story. I haven't had an issue but you may need to supply a bill of sale and price is on there and if you made two bill of sales and something happens with it maybe only cause problems having a cheaper bill of sale.

Remember to get a title for the trailer, I got burnt buying my tuffy from WI. In WI you dont title the trailer or whatever, so when I got to MN to register the boat and trailer I was only able to register the boat. I had to call the guy I bought it from and have him make up generic title. A piece of paper stating he sold me this model trailer for this much $.

When I bought the last boat we just listed the trailer value separate on the Bill of Sale to make everything at the license Bureau easier.... It was a dual axle Ranger trailer, and we listed it at $750.00 to alleviate some taxes. The License Attendant didn't bat an eye.

thescottith: In WI if the weight of the trailer & everything on/in the trailer is 3000 lbs or less it doesn't need to be registered (license plate), 3001 lbs & up it needs to have registration/license plate and title. If the trailer was purchased new, it should've had a Certificate of Origination, think of it as a birth certificate for the trailer. Titling the trailer is always the best route to go whether or not it needs registration. Hope this helps.

Ranger trailers are titled from the factory.

So I just bought a boat from WI and registered it here in MN last week. I had one bill of sale for the boat/trailer package and the original 'WI certificate of origin' for the trailer. The bill of sale didn't list a separate price for the trailer, so I printed out the NADA estimated value for the trailer. They used that value to calculate the taxes I needed to pay. No questions asked.
