Posts: 735 Location: Apparently where the Muskie aren't | Here's a good one. I don't believe I've seen a thread directly dedicated to it before. I'm going to try a buff because I hate wearing sunscreen and when I do I burn anyways. I'm sure I'll draw my own conclusion to what I prefer after I try a buff, but I want to see what everyone else thinks.

Posts: 242 | I actually do both. The buff is there for when my sunscreen wears off and I forget to reapply. The sunscreen is there for when I forget to have my buff up. You can never be too careful when it comes to protecting yourself from sun exposure.

Posts: 410 Location: With my son on the water | Try this sun screen. The best I have found and recommended by my Doctor, and trust me (I need it). (Waterproof, comes in a pump so you can mist it on, odorless, dries fast, don't even realize you have it on. doesn't damage cloths) Like any sunscreen a big key is to put it on 30-60 prior to exposure so it can soak in and setup. http://www.bananaboat.com/products/quick-dry-sunscreen

Posts: 815 Location: Waukee, IA | I have a tube of SPF 50 in both my tackle box and boat and always have at least 1 buff in the truck. I wear long sleeve cool gear. When it's hot I wet the buff, my hat and my shirt sleeves with lake water. Liquid cooled engines run harder LOL.

Posts: 705 Location: Alex or Alek? | If you want to stay safe wear both. There are going to be times during the day where you aren't wearing your buff, also some parts that wont be covered. Big spot I always seam to forget is the tops of my feet since I fish barefoot a lot. Nothing like trying to put a pair of shoes on burnt feet monday morning for work after a weekend of fishing.

Posts: 46 | Same here. I wear both and I wear them right up to the end of musky season. I haven't had a screen ruin my clothing since I stopped using screen that contained Paba. Since very few of them are Paba based any more, that shouldn't be an issue. In summer I used Neutragena(SP?) SPF 85. I've already had three basal cells removed so I tend to be supremely cautious. In the early season or late season I'll move down to a SPF 50 or so.

Posts: 140 Location: Scandia MN | I wear both but the buff looks cool - I will say if you pull the buff up around you sun glasses and cap brim it blocks sunlight and enhances your ability to see under the water - Florida guide trick that works well on clear water situations - Still looking for one that works on stained water which of course is where I fish most of the time - - - -

For those that wear a buff, doesn't it get hot? I have looked at them because I have had some cells removed, my ears peel year round from damage done when I was young, decades ago before sunscreen. I wear sunscreen, a wide brimmed hat, etc. but think a buff would help with my ears. Have not bought because it flat looks hot and uncomfortable.

Posts: 386 | I've only noticed it on super hot days with no wind. The kind of days I sit in the AC, fall asleep on the couch, wake up when the bar-seen folks are off the road and in bed, and hook up the trailer.

Posts: 735 Location: Apparently where the Muskie aren't | That's one of my main reasons for posting this because I'm from the Chicago area and it can get very hot. Most of my muskie fishing isn't in Illinois but I do bass fish around here almost every weekend. I to was worried about the buff getting too hot but it beats skin cancer by a mile. And I also think that even though you will endure a little more heat, just keeping the sun off you will make you feel less fatigued and burnt out by the end of a long day. At least to me it seems like the effects of the sun beating on me and burning me all day make me much more miserable than just dealing with the heat itself.

Posts: 46 | As noted, it can be warm in extremely hot and humid weather. However, it's certain the alternative is far worse. Actually, I have more issues with it steaming up my sun goggles than anything else.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will pick one up and give it an honest try.

Posts: 1000 | try different brands. I personally prefer the patagonia ones, but I'd like to try the Huk ones this year. I also wear sun shirts and shifted to shoes for the long days. More comfortable too.
