Posts: 735 Location: Apparently where the Muskie aren't | I know there is threads on this from a while ago but I wanted some updated opinions. I'm having Thorne make me a rod and I can't decide between a regular reel seat and a palming one. I've never used a palming reel seat but I really like the idea of it. What's your guys opinion, should I go with the palming or stick with the regular? I don't know if this effects your opinion but I have a nacl 60 that will go on the rod. Thanks.

Posts: 483 | if i where you i would find a palming rod from friends and try it out casting, in the snow if you have to ! a custom rod is too special to mess it up !

Posts: 668 Location: mercer wi | Have you ever help a rod with the palming seat. I would wait to put that on a custom if you've never used them. I personally like the palming seat that's on the stcroix lt for the tranx. Didn't like the feel of it with any of the low pros out now. I really didn't like the the palming seat on the elites. Just personal preference. Take you reel to a shop that you know carriers the reel seat that on a factory rod or take to a show and get a feel for it.

Posts: 735 Location: Apparently where the Muskie aren't | Thanks, I'll defiantly stop by fishing connection and see if they have some I could throw my reel on. Anyway what's your guys opinion on it, do you like? Did it take a while for you to get used to? Do you see any advantages or disadvantages? Anybody not like it at first, then end up loving it? I don't think holding the rod and reeling will be an issue but I'm not sure how it will sit in my hand while casting, since I have to move my hand back a little to hit the release and hold the spool.

Posts: 427 | I have no use for them. The rod feels good until you cast a while then you realize the natural way the rod used to pivot in your hand ain't happening! I was able to re manufacture the grip almost back to a standard grip by using a Dremel but I wouldn't recommend this fix to any one. One mistake and the rods ruined. I fixed a friends seat the same way on his custom too. I'd try to find one and cast in the drive for about 15-20 min then decide. You either love em or hate em. I only use the Toro series, NaCls and Revo S reels on the rods and found them all uncomfortable. But you pays your money and makes your choice. Good Luck

Posts: 735 Location: Apparently where the Muskie aren't | For you guys who don't like them, what didn't you like about them? Did they hurt your wrist or fingers? Did you feel like you didn't have good control over the rod? I have small hands and I only put one finger behind a regular trigger. So what I did to see how I could control the rod was I took my regular trigger and put all my fingers in front of the trigger and palmed the reel. It actually didn't feel bad, and with a long handle tucked under my armpit I think it could be comfortable. I just feel like I needed more room to fit my pinky finger in comfortably. I'm still going to put my nacl on a rod with a palming trigger before I make a decision but what do you thnk of my little experiment? Do you think it was a valid test or no?

Posts: 427 | Trigger is very wide. If I put the trigger between ANY of my fingers after a 1/2 hr or so the rubbing was very irritating. A standard trigger is a round taper to a point so your fingers don't rub against a sharp angle. The palm grip is not made for holding your fingers in between the trigger. At least not in my hands.

Posts: 668 Location: mercer wi | Different reel sit differently on reel seats. I found then NaCl sit farther forward on reel seat which created a bigger gap between hand on reel. Same with all the low pro reels just different degrees. I found the round and bigger reels ( calcutta, 6500, tranx, Lexa 400, saltist ) fit better. Just my opinion Again best is to use a rod or at least get a feel for how it will sit in hand at a show or store be fore you spend money on custom.

Posts: 668 Location: Wisconsin | I really like it. I switched over my older rods to the palmer's. BUT, I agree you need to check it out for yourself. Some guys can't stand it, some don't care, and some gotta have it!

Posts: 735 Location: Apparently where the Muskie aren't | Like I said before I'm still defiantly going to get my reel onto a rod before I make a decision. I may not have the opportunity to cast it though. It would be nice to find a 2 peice one so I could swing the butt section around without destroying the store lol. For you guys that use them, like em or not. How did you feel casting with them was? I don't think that holding them and retrieving with it will be a problem. I normally switch my hand position on the retrieve a few times throughout the day anyway so I could probably adjust to the retrieve. But I'm most concerned with casting. At least when I cast, I move my hand back a little to hit the release and thumb the spool, so where do your fingers end up when engaging the spool? Does the trigger get in the way. I switch hands to cast. I don't know if that really matters.

Posts: 291 Location: Madison, WI | After switching to the palming seats, I now have feeling back in my last two fingers on my left hand, ie no more claw. Would usually take a few months after Canada for that. It's awkward at first and you don't feel like you have as much grip or control but an hour in you won't even notice. Makes no difference setting hook or controlling a fish.

Posts: 427 | I don't switch hands. I have both left and right hand reels that I switch off during the day. With that said the turning of my wrist during the cast and the way I hold the reel is a problem. The trigger gets in the way since I don't change my grip on the rod much if at all while casting. You have to try it out yourself. Maybe switching hands would help I never tried it. It's a love hate thing with this seat. I know guys who love them.
