Posts: 670 Location: mercer wi | So my wife is getting me a headlock for christmas, and is a glass rod really needed. I'll probly only be trolling once in awhile not super serious about it. I know everyone preaches you need glass for trolling and sucker fishing but I've been using graphite for years and never a issue when putting the screws to fish on suckers. Modern graphite rods are alot stronger then graphite 20+ years ago. Would like to hear opinions on this. My sucker set ups now are 8' h mojo with saltist. Will that be fine for a novice troller.

Posts: 8 | I've been using the Tackle Industries 9 ft telescopic 2x and 3x for the past several years. I like the backbone to be stiff with running the tips down. They also second as my sucker rods. Never used glass, but truly rely on my Ti's. Durable, and affordable. I troll smaller baits, don't know what kind of stress you will put on the mojo. Reel should be fine.

Location: Eagle Lake Vermilion Bay, Ontario | as far as graphite goes the mojo is a very durable rod,as are premiers). we use mojo's (both musky rods and multi specie spinning rods) for our "guest " rods. for those who dont bring thier own because either they flew ,are beginners,or when they showed up thiers were inadequate for the presentations the guides were using. VERY FEW IF ANY BREAKAGE and failures we had were not really failures but to expected, stepping on,rod holder lids, fish rolling up the leader in the net,etc and believe me there is plenty of other abuse going on in the course of season. that being said it is still my recomendation to use glass or composite for trolling and livebaiting ESPECIALLY in colder weather and most importantly below freezing temps. I HAVE SEEN LOTS OF GRAPHITE RODS EXPLODE TROLLING WITH TO TIGHT DRAGS,SUPERLINES AND SNAGS AND POWER SETTING ON LIVEBAITS. if you do it enough in cold weather sooner or later you will have a tizzy on your hands. failures that occur are usually the result of a minute injury that most time you cant even see due to wacking the rod on the top of the boat edge, someone stepping on the rod, rod locker lid got dropped on it,etc, etc prior, maybe even months prior and even a number of fish prior sometimes. lots of good rods and diff. options out there that will work, my recommendation in the st croix line and my preference for both trolling and livebaiting is the premier PGM80HM which is a composite blank. i've never broken one and my stuff gets banged around alot. i do wrap the cork with a black rod handle wrap to protect the cork for trolling in some rod holders and soak up the sun in cold weather. i dont find any real advantage to a long 9-10'+ rod for livebaiting, only disadvantages. there's more weight so more physically tiring by days end because i hold the rod and work the bait 90% of the time. actually more control and more power can be exerted on a fish with a shorter/med length rod so it's a bit easier to get fish close for netting quickly. long rods 9'+ major advantages are primarily in casting presentations ,boatside manuevers, and forgiveness. for trolling i dont use rods over 8.5' except for a set of 10.5's i have for outside lines in clear water to get a set of baits away from the boat a bit when im not using boards. the only set of long trolling rods i had that were graphite i broke 1 at the reel seat. lots of diff ideas and opinions out there that will get you by. these thoughts have been learned mostly the hard way and have worked for me day in and day out for a long time. steve herbeck AML prop. emeritus, guest fishing instruction program coordinator, master guide facebook.com/AndyMyersLodge.com andymyerslodge.com

Posts: 670 Location: mercer wi | I was leaning to get the croix glass just to be safe. Don't really y see myself trolling a bunch. Maybe I'll like it. Could be good for the wife and kids. Just didn't want to spend $300 if I could get away without.

Posts: 612 | Also I don't think it really matters weather the rod is pure graphite. Some great rods are glass - graphite composite (made by say St Croix) and others.

Posts: 670 Location: mercer wi | So I stoped by st croix today to check out the premier glass rod. Was talking to the guys in tjere about the rod. Got alot of info from them. Asked about if they had any 2nd in back butt didn't in tjat model. They suggested the mojo cat 8'xh. Same blank same action just diffrent weight rating. I asked if everything was the second blank why the diffrence in rating. They explained the rod application was the diffrence. Since the cat rods aren't meet for casting they carry a heavier rating. So all said and done $100 for a 2nd rod at stcroix. And I know everyone takes warrenties, but 2nd have the standard 1 year but has a modified replace warrent. Anyway you look at it its a good deal. Thanks for all info.

Posts: 1638 Location: Minnesota | I don't troll a lot but when I do I use Thorn Bros E Glass rods . With Tekota 500 and 600 line counting reels. They handle head locks and Matt locks great.

Posts: 219 | Lots of good advice above. We have been running ToothTamer rods for the past several years with good success. Great rods, great quality and a good price! Check them out. The 8'6" MH is one of the best "all around" rods IMO.
