Posts: 859 Location: MN | I recently purchased some tyrant short shank hooks for some my jerkbaits. They seem to have a needle point vs the standard point I'm used to. Looking for sharpening tips. The hook doesn't have a flat side to it more rounded.

Posts: 612 | I know some will disagree but that why I buy only Gamakatsu and Owner hooks needle sharp out of the package. If a hook needs sharpening I use the Smitty file. It's work but it works. excuse the pun.

Posts: 859 Location: MN | I will be honest I sharpen every hook, I never trust a hook to be sharp. But I have not used the brands mentioned.

Posts: 243 Location: South Central Wisconsin | Take your fingers and gently grab the hook from the bottom. If any of them aren't "sticky", they aren't sharp enough. I read on here over and over how people lose fish. If I was a betting man, I'd blame 90% of it on people not spending the time to sharpen their hooks properly. Take the time to learn how to do it properly. You'll be glad you did.

Sure you can have a nice sticky point, yes its "sharp" but needle points are garbage for muskie fishing....all you end up with is a bent hook point and broken dreams. You want a cutting point, a sharp cone, knife edge on the barb side.

Posts: 612 | When the sharpened hook digs in (makes a scratch) when run across your finger nail it's sharp enough. Simple but effective test for hooks after sharpening. One can over sharpen a hook point thus ruining it as pointed out.

Posts: 670 Location: mercer wi | I use a battery powered dremal with the round sharping stone. Low speed, make a pyramid out of the point. Fast and sharp. The dremal and stone was like $25 at walmart. I use it alot. Charge it twice and good for whole season.
