I thought these were 6 ounces??? On the thorne bros. website it lists them as 3 1/4 oz. Also, what is the difference between the hang 10 and the original manta, is it just the weight?

They are alot bigger and are definitely closer to 6oz. than 3 1/4oz. The origional ones sink and the Hang 10 suspends nicely. The glide is a little more controlled than the 8" and you can keep them close too the surface if you work them a little faster. Easy to work, but a little hard on the arms after a couple hours. I have moved some nice fish on them including a pair of 50+ but no takers YET!

so the original ones are 8" and the hang 10 are 10" right?. in the video on the river run site, they seemed to have the same action except for the 10" one wasnt as erratic

Mr. Pike (what a handle--at first thought you were a Lund boat!) OK, just kidding. Some info: Manta's come in several varieties (Surface Skimmer, Super Shallow, Original (no filter), and Hang 10). The weighting varies a few tenths by model. They vary only in weight/color; and of course, size). Thorne's probably just used an old computerized description, and didn't catch the error. New ones are labeled by type on the tail piece. Skimmer's are very light, hence the name. Super Shallow's sink very slowly, meant for high weeds & rocks; Original's drop a bit faster and are meant to get a bit more depth tho they can work shallow if started early, and believe me, the big 10's will go down too, if you give 'em a chance. Medium weight leaders work best on the small ones. There really isn't much difference in sink rate among the last two, however. The big one's have been tagging some nice fish since March (50"-Kentucky). Heard a rumor that one of the Thorne Bros. guys stuck a 49" on his first cast. Would have loved to have seen his face (the guy--not the fish!) Heard about two 49" Northerns which will be on video, so beware, Mr. Pike.

On the hang ten i have moved one upper 40`s fish in the short time i was able to actually use the bait! Has anyone else had their leaders destroyed into a 90deg. bend? About every 6th cast the leader is bent on the front hook and shot, these are R&H 9" heavy jerk leaders and have tried longer ones too! What is the correct way to set-up this bait? Any idea`s? Kinda disappointed for a expensive bait,or is my disappointment lack of knowledge of this bait? Wondering!

That's a new one. May have something to do with your casting technique, or maybe the leader weight causes it to hang down on the cast, or what? Does the lure just sail on the cast or cartwheel? Generally, they just sail. Try some different casting techniques. That should tell you something. They (the big ones) do require a pretty sturdy rod. We like at least 7 footers and just sort of lob them out. There is too much loading for lighter rods. Oddly, they work pretty easy once in the water. Anyway, try some varied casting techniques or medium weight 10 or 12 inch leaders (maybe about 150-175# straight wire?), and see what happens. Works for me, so hope it helps. By the way--good idea to use 100# braid--in case of "professional overruns"! NEVER use mono, it just doesn't work. And, in case anyone wonders: Hang 10 means it suspends a little in the water, not that it snarls the leader... It's a surfing thing, you fresh water dudes. REX, aka, the Shark's daddy.

I'm w/ you Rex on the surf lingo dude! An east coaster meself who used to wander state to state getting tubed. In fact, me first skate board was a Hang 10; simple stuff back then and the wheels on those things were the same ones they used on the old street roller skates. Been over 35 yrs. ago; not sure how far over!:O One way to launch the "Mantra" is to get a paper towel tube, fill w/ lighter fluid and strike a kitchen match; drop in the bait, aim, light, and BINGO...
