Location: So. Illinois | Can anyone offer a suggestion for an add-on line counter? I have two rod / reel combos I use for trolling (Heavy Shimano's with a C3 and a C4 Abu). Is there a quality line counter on the market that I can purchase? I am not that familiar with them but I see you can buy ones that mount on the rod in front of the reel. Any suggestions would be apprecaited.

Location: Holly, MI | The guys trolling on Lake St Clair by me use the "passes" technique for judging line out. Do it in your backyard first and learn your reel. If three passes on the level wind is 20 feet in the yard than it will be the same on the water. The fishing reports are kinda like this.. "16fow,8/3, jointed T-3 Firebass" <-- 16 feet water depth, 8 oz lead weight, 3 passes on the reel, and a Firebass colored T-3 Terminator lure.
I doubt if the aftermarket line counters will hold up to the riggors of musky fishing. This method will save you some money and be accurate too.

Location: Willoughby, Ohio | I tried the Abu-Garcia add on line counter for the C3 & C4 reels and found it is a P.O.S. It's noisy and only works 1/2 the time, if that, and it eats batteries. The simple old Shakespeare clip on line counter works fine for me. Besides, it's only $12 vs $40 for the Abu-Garcia |

Location: Grove City, OH | I have the Abu add on and my clicker doesn't work now, so I am going to take it back off. I use the "pass" method too.

Location: So. Illinois | Thanks all for your suggestions. I have never heard of the pass technique but it makes sense, get to know your reel and you can deterine the amount of line out. Thanks again.
