Posts: 1137 Location: Holly, MI | Does anyone else out there do this? I have been trolling an 8 inch cranes perch along with other actual trolling lures. The trolling lures that I use are made to go 4-5 mph no problem. The Crane seems to flip out occasionally. It can't quite keep up to this trolling speed. When it does stay under it is very unstable and erratic until it surfaces and usually dives again. This Crane has put two monsters in the boat on the last two trips out. Is it the eratic chaos way of swimming that is attracting attention or just the right color? If it is the action, what other lures will preform (or should I say ..not preform) in this manner? The Musky stalkers, Lokes, Terminators, Believers etc all can handle the speed. I want to try more lures in different patterns that loop out and swim crazy like the Crane is doing. If you have one and have not tried it you should! Keep speeding up until it blows out and won't stay down then back off just enough that it will stay down most of the time. Posts: 1137 Location: Holly, MI | There has to be another good lure for this presentation. Help! I tried putting the big lip on a Slammer to my belt sander to copy the smaller lip of the Crane. I have yet to try it out to see if it makes the cut. I hope it works because the huge profile and flat sides of the Slammer should be awesome.

Posts: 1137 Location: Holly, MI | Will the straight Believers (and others) blow out sooner than a similar jointed one? Seems like most of the high speed trolling lures are jointed.

Posts: 78 Location: Pardeeville, WI | First of all, thats one hell of a fish. Congratulations! My Jointed ShallowRaider will shoot 2 feet completely out of the water at speeds 3.8 and greater. I thought it was a bad thing. I guess I will keep it and give it some more chances. I guess it makes sense. BTW- Are you on Lake St. Clair? Edited by BTPF 7/7/2003 5:04 PM

Posts: 1137 Location: Holly, MI | Thanks on the congats. She went 46 1/2 (no stinkin scale in the boat). I still have not seduced that 50 inch sow. She keeps me awake at night. Yes that is on Lake St Clair. I'm holding my breath that the slammer will hold in at 5 mph with the ground down lip. I'm pretty sure (from posts to this thread and talking to others) that the eratic, goofy, non-conventional swimming is triggering the fish. "Super Wounded Baitfish" My other hot lure this year got swiped by a hog on the same trip. It was the ugliest trolling lure you ever saw. I think it started out as a Musky Stalker or similar. It was mostly brown with some yellow spots and lots of missing paint from hook drags and teeth. If anyone has somthing like this, I'd propably pay too much for it. Might not have been the color as much as the action on that peticular lure tho. Maybe the believers and whizzes will not act as civil on the shallow setting. I have been running them on the deep setting and short lines (20 ft or so). On the deep setting they do pretty good at 4-5 mph. Lots of guys trolling out my way with weight too. I have run some lead but not hooked a fish on a deeper line.

| There have been a few articles about using "out of tune" crankbaits to trigger fish. My favorite "detuned" open water trolling lure is an 8" Pig crankbait, which I have bent the metal lip down slightly. At speeds above 3 mph it will swim erratically from side to side, It does stay down, and I can troll it to 10-15 feet deep and it will maintain this action. If you are looking for other crankbaits which will "detune" when needed look to those with metal lips as they are the easiest to adjust. | |||

Posts: 20281 Location: oswego, il | 8" jakes will blow out, so will jointed depth raiders. They can't handle much speed. I do alot of trolling and will post other lures as they come to mind, what's left of it.
