Posts: 83 Location: North of Sweden! | First off, I'll warn you all that this post will most likely be a long-winded one (as usual with me) but you can, if you feel like it, just kinda give me all info you feel like sharing regarding my subject above as that kinda tells it all, the rest is just background and such... I've been away on work for almost 5weeks, and, at the end of that period I received a message from my wife (who were at home, working and studying) which read: "how is the muskie-fishing in Montreal? would you like me to apply to a place there for my grad-work?" ( grad-work might be more correct to translate in to thesis? or something??? dunno....) well, apparently I have the best wife ever, but, I have no idea how the fishing is around there? and around that time-period??? To put things simple, I am from sweden, we live in sweden and I have never ever seen a muskie in my life, pike is another story as that is what I fish for as long as the waters are ice-free up here. But, my wife knows I have ALWAYS dreamed of getting to fish for muskie, hence her concern for wheter or not that place would be an OK place to stay for a couple of months. As we are no where near rich (I'm guessing pee-poor is a more appropriate word :D ) it would mean I would be exploring Montreal and nearby areas (whatever cheap transportation I can get hold of) for the period of May 1st - end of August... That is of course IF she applies and is accepted and everything else is able to kinda work out to the best... So, I assume I would be fishing from land for the most part as I won't have a boat (of course, kinda obvious), but, on the other hand, I still don't have a boat around here and I am 34years old, so, I have some experience as to what fishing from land is all about...i.e. no problem walking for ever and grinding through all the foresty stuff and sweating like a pig.... :D though I would love to be able to scrape enough cash together to perhaps be able to go out on some boat at least once with some knowledgeable guide around there, maybe some longer trip would be doable as well? have no idea as to prices around there yet. But, enough about that, to my questions: 1. how is the fishing (for muskie) around there during that time? 2. rules and regulations? 3. tips for finding info and/or tips for people I should reach out to? Kind regards /peter Edited by PikePeter 10/2/2016 5:32 AM

Posts: 83 Location: North of Sweden! | Anybody??? Sorry to be bugging you about it but my wife needs to send her application in just a few days (or preferably today actually) so, if my "wall-of-text"-post above put you off, I'd just be glad and happy with any info at all to begin with, like a thumbs up or down would suffice! :D Any muskies up there in and around Montreal??? :D Still, if this ends up a dead end (might be so anyways as it is no guarantee that my wife can get the spot or us having enough cash to make it happen) she has a bunch of different other options as to where to apply for her grad-work, but, it sure would be nice to be able to get to some place where there are muskies around!!! :D Only downside to ending up in Montreal as I can see it right now is the fact I had hoped (and actually dreamed) of being able to buy lots of stuff from James of Tackle Industries...But I suppose that buying American stuff in canada will be just about as expensive as buying it here in europe (TI has an awesome french retailer from what I've gathered where I have considered ordering a 9' XXH rod from) but we will see what is going to happen, quite a long ways away anyways... and, also, if Montreal doesn't hold a bunch of muskies it won't hold a bunch of muskie-fishermen either... which was also a big part of my dream of coming over that big old water; to get to possibly meet up with a bunch of equally fish-crazed fisherman on the other side of the pond!!! kind regards, tight lines & hard hook-ups! /peter Edited by PikePeter 10/3/2016 3:25 AM

Posts: 92 | I would highly recommend hiring Marc Thorpe. I have been out there with him four or 5 trips now and its always been in July. That trip should be on everyones bucket list. Nice thing is you are a short drive from The Ottawa or the St. Lawrence depending on what your preference is. I'm no expert on these two rivers but the Ottawa is more of tannic bog stained system while the St. Lawrence is pretty clear. Its still musky fishing and she can hand you your keester on any given day but those waters definitely hold some dandies.

Huge thank you for this info!!! will have to try and look in to that guy then!!! Posts: 1169 Location: New Hope MN | I've done some business in Montreal over the years, and the city is quite beautiful. The St. Lawrence river is quite famous for musky, but I've never wet a line there. If you decide to start chasing musky, you will quickly forget all about pike. They just don't compare... Have you/your wife considered any other location? Madison in Wisconsin and Minneapolis in Minnesota are both excellent choices if you need good schools and close by musky fishing. You would likely be able to go out with someone from this site for the price of a few beers.

Location: On the O | You won't be disappointed. Season doesn't open until late June. But your best chance at big fish is probably the first couple weeks of the season. I would get in touch with this guy http://www.missionmaskinonge.com/ he's also the chapter chair of the Montreal chapter of Muskies Canada. It's typically a trolling area but more and more people are casting. But with so much area to fish you want to cover water and trolling is the best way. Pretty much all the rivers that run in and around Montreal have muskie in them so you should be able to access somewhere decent, it is an island afterall Not sure if you'd be interested but there is also a growing sturgeon fishery around Montreal and they can be landed from shore.

Sounds more and more like Montreal (if it happens to work out) will be a good place to be at least. She has applied for that spot and she is also of course applying for some more spots when they come (I hope hope hope some more areas near muskies will come her way :D ) as she has some time left for making her applications and such, only the montreal-spot was due recently. Actually I have been pestering my wife about Minnesota and Wisconsin for a looong time (she would like to go there as well, so, not really any problem to persuade her) but it doesn't seem like there are any openings in her field over there at least not this time around... would've loved to get to meet up a few people from this board if/when this trip happens (otherwise I'll be over in due time anyways for some vacation sometime, need to get my ass over) and just meet up and chat at least! meeting up with new fish-crazed people usually is a whole lot of fun!!! I was recently working away from home (for a little over ~4weeks) next to swedens biggest and europe's third biggest lake "Vänern" and I spent ALL my free-time there driving around, fishing, meeting up with fishermen of all kinds, it was awesome!!! (not much sleep done during this time though and caught only small pikes sadly, but, otherwise completely awesome!!!) And, what you are writing about regarding the Musky... this is something I have known "forever" and kinda both fear and look forward to... :D the day I start fishing for musky is most likely the day I will be hooked for life... :D Kinda a scary thought as I have a lot of family and friends here in sweden... but, hey, it's just a quick trip across the pond so they can all come visit whenever anyways??? I'm guessing I'll be moving to some musky-area in no time... :D Kind Regards /peter

Thanks!!! Well, yeah, I hear ya on the trolling for covering water... I was recently down at swedens biggest/europes third biggest lake "Vänern" and, well... felt like trolling is the way to go, and, then that is comparatively quite a small body of water to what you guys have available to you... so, I can see the point, and, also, just to clarify, I don't ONLY fish from land, like that is not my only way of fishing for some reason. It is just something I assume will be my go-to thing as I am guessing I won't be able to afford buying a boat... but, if it is a viable option (for whatever reason) I LOVE going out in a boat; trolling, casting or whatever, actually just drinking coffee and netting is also OK by me :D just getting out is what I love the most!!! Thanks for the heads up about season opening, and, huge thank you for the link! Will try and contact him when I know this is happening for real. Have gotten a few great tips in regards to people to contact, which is worth it's weight in gold, would really love to be able to go out with one/some knowledgable people at least once or twice (depends on price I suppose in the end) while over there, seems like "a must" sort of... Though, my french would need a tad bit of freshening up to be honest...or, as it is non-existent at the moment, freshening up is down-playing it, by...A LOT... :D if it happens to go through with Montreal perhaps that is also something I should be looking in to, studying french... Kind Regards from a cold cold sweden!!! (but the pikes are in AWESOME shape right now, have awoken from the summer and are feeding like crazy for winter-time and have gotten in to GREAT CONDITION by now, caught two really good ones yesterday) /peter

Posts: 83 Location: North of Sweden! | Unfortunately Montreal was not to be, not this time around at least. The spot for grad-work that wifey had applied to was given to someone else. This means that I might end up somewhere completely different, but, time will tell! :D hopefully somewhere like wisconsin or minnesota... :D though, so far no spots open there that suits her grad-work and such, but, who knows??? Just wanted send a HUGE THANK YOU!!! to all who have contributed to this thread and given me priceless advice and information, either in this thread or via PM's!!! just a simple THANK YOU ALL!!! and may forever all your lines be tight and the hook-ups hard!!! cold and icy regards from the north of sweden!!! /peter
