Hi!
I have a question for you more seasoned trolling-guys (or anyone else with any input of course).

I am not one to go trolling a lot (barely ever, to be honest, as I have no boat my self...well, no wonder then eh?).
What I go do from time to time though (and hope to get to do all the rest of this fall season) is something we up in the north of sweden, in swedish that is, call; "bonna-trolla" :D which, I suppose, could be literally translated in to something like;
"farmer-trolling", "redneck-trolling" or "yokel-trolling" :D something along those lines, well, you get the gist of it I'd guess.
What that entails is just simply sitting in the boat (usually some small #*#*ty boat with a #*#*ty engine) and just holding on to rod of choice (one) and dragging lure of choice (I have had great success on a slowly "bonna-trollad" 10" Jointed Believer in firetiger lately).

But, even though there is no problem using my Okuma EVX 8'6" Musky XH (4-12oz) for this task (in fact I've found this rod to be very nice for that), I'd still like to get a "simpler" rod for this simple task...
Trolling rods are (comparatively at least) very cheap and durable, so, it would be nice to have one to just "toss around" in any old friends boat.
And, as I am in sweden and on a very tight budget the UglyStiks look to be my best choice (actually seems like a good choice no matter the circumstances). What I will buy is ONE of two options, both of them UglyStiks, so, no problem choosing brand or so...

MY CHOICES, as I see them, ARE:

X
UglyStik Tiger Gold+
8'2" 15-40lb
this model has some form of rubber-cork handle and the classic see-thru tip, looks to be a kinda "de-luxe" model of the regular Tiger Golds? +2" longer

or

Y
UglyStik Tiger
8" 12-30lb
Classic yellow one, no see-thru tip (if that actually has any significance??? see my questions below) and EVA handles. I do prefer the aesthetics of this rod over the other, but, that matters none when it comes to fishing.

So, finally on to my ACTUAL QUESTIONS!!! (getting long-winded, as per usual):

1. Which one do you guys find to be more "durable"??? What I am looking for in regards to this buy of a rod is something that will take the abuse, I have no plan on trying to take care of this rod, at all, sure, I won't be stepping on it or slamming it in car doors (if I can avoid it :D ) but it won't be treated like my Okuma which I kinda baby around (until, "FISH ON!!!" and then all bets of course are off :D ).

2. which one of these are "more glass" than the other??? what I am getting at is that older glass-fiber-rods (at least seemed so when I was young) totally un-breakable while newer rods (while perhaps more sensitive and lighter) are more twig-like in their nature.

3. follow-up on #2 above, but, is the see-thru tip of the newer models a sign of more glassfiber or are they basically the same construction but in the older they just chose to keep the tip colored and the newer see-thru?

4. more follow-up on constructions; I know they are different, just don't really understand the difference in practicality in regards to durability and so, have read something about the older (yellow ones) to be "two layers" sort of while the newer being constructed in three layers?

5. if you have no have no patience for reading thru all my blabbering above, which one do you (based on whatever, own experience, friends, internetz and so on) think is the more durable choice for getting thrown around in cars, boats and such?

Both of these choices are about the same price (actually I can find them for exactly the same price, just that the Gold+ I have to buy two of which is no problem as if I go that route a friend of mine will take one of them, so, same price) and they are both equally "easy" to buy (need to order and wait... that dreaded wait.... :D ) so, choice is going to be purely based on which of these would be more durable...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
-4° C (~24 degrees Fahrenheit) this morning, so, winter is coming, quick... so, I'd better make the most of the few weeks left of fishing up here now!!!

Kid regards

No one with opinions about this???

I did a friend a favor and in return got to borrow a small small boat for the rest of the season (unfortunately I have not found a motor to borrow yet though, so, still not really any "bonna-trolling" in sight for me, but closer to it!!!) so I am itching to buy a "toss-around-rod" but would like to hear some opinions from this board first as this board sure is at the top of my go-to places for knowledge regarding fishing-related stuff...

kind and cold regards!

Perhaps there's no replies because in the US we don't have the same models you're referring to. On top of that, my recent perusal of the US Ugly Stik website seems to indicate they've recently changed the models they offer.

I have a 7' BWC220270AO medium heavy rated for 30-60 lb. line and 3/4 to 8 oz lures which they no longer offer. I use it as a down-rod trolling. They used to have models (unlike mine) with all stainless guides (no inserts), but now they all seem to have aluminum oxide inserts like mine. If you have the option over there and will be doing a lot of cold-weather trolling and knock the rod around a lot I'd recommend the all-stainless guide with no insert models. Over all, they're very durable rods that can take some abuse. The EVA handles are a cut above the material I've seen used on some other inexpensive rods and last a long time. Overall the rods are a great buy.

 *EDIT*

They do still make this rod, though it's now the "USTB3060C701" and doesn't have guide inserts.

Ah, #*^@, I understand... huge thank you for taking the time to clear things up a bit anyways...

And, it looks like the one you are linking are the same as one of my two options (option "Y" Ugly Stik Tiger). And, well, as I am looking to use it, quite exactly as you describe (it will be my "abuse-rod" :D ) with cold-weather trolling and generally getting beat up, I might just go for those as it seems to be with all stainless eyelets on the ones offered over here as well (though, before I order I'll make sure to call and double-check for that).

Huge thank you for your time and reply! looking more and more like it'll be a nice yellow one I'll be picking up before long then!!! :D

kind regards

Unfortunately this rod doesn't really seem to be readily available over here, and, the ones I manage to find seem too expensive for me (at the moment).
But, it looks like a really nice rod otherwise!!!
Thanks for the tip!!!

...darn... talked to the guys selling the Ugly Stik Tiger (the yellow "classic" one) over here... and, unfortunately those rods (contrary to the pics on the homepage) are made with the usual black rod guides and silver inserts...

might still go for it anyways as price is good (~40$) and from what I've heard now from lots of swedish (especially one reputable guy whose knowledge I have in high regard and whom I have huge respect for) fishermen is they like the action of the old yellow ones more than the newer ones... +I would like to order a landing net from the same place anyways most likely... we'll see, gonna make my mind up this weekend so I at least might get a chance to use it a little bit this season...

I still have A QUESTION though (actually I also asked it above in my massive first wall-of-text-post)?

Does anyone have any insight in to any changes/differences the Ugly Stiks have gone through, construction-wise, over the years?
I am guessing, but, even though the models and model-names are different over with you guys vs over here, I'd guess the rod-blanks are most likely the same regarding construction...

***so, anyone know the actual difference, construction-wise/durability, in between the "clear" tips vs the other "all-yellow" ones?`

Kind and icy cold regards!
