Looking for recomendations for a rod and reel combo for a 13 year old boy. Any suggestions? Mostly top water and bucktails.

Thanks

Depending on his size tackle industries makes a children's size musky rid of nice quality? Otherwise I would just go with a regular 8ft heavy or xh tackle industries musky rod. Great price, great service. I would pair it with an Abu low profile toro s reel. Could throw just about anything short of pounders with that combo.

I would go with a komodo or quantum exo300 for the reel. They are smaller than the new revo toros and are both good reels.

And the crank on the same side as his spinning reel.

Let him play around with your combos. Get him use to using heavy gear, casting retrieveing figure 8ing. Then let him pick out a combo for himself.
My 9 year old uses and old 8' mh premier and a curado 300. He also has a 7' mh triumph and a citrix 6 gear for jerk bait.
Answer all questions best ypu can teach him everything you know and enjoy every moment.

By 13, I'd say he'd be capable of handling the "adult sized" gear we all use. That way you don't have to worry about him growing out of it, and if he decides he doesn't enjoy musky fishing, you get a new combo..

My kid is 13. Been fishing since 9. He uses a 7.5' jerk bait rod and a nacl50 high speed. He started out with a kids, 6' ti rod and a winch 50. Ti is an Awesome rod , had 50's on it and no problem but as they learn to 8 and get proficient, its simply too short. The 7.5 is good as the handle isnt too long. The high speed reels are the ticket. Kids dont like reeling big baits. Smaller baits with speed is good for kids. Keeps them interested and focused. I owe my kid $15 as he has yet to rat nest a cast this season, unlike his ol man..

My 10 year old son has a 7'11" MH with a 300 EJ on it that he uses most of the time. He also has a musky sized spinning setup that he switches to when he is getting tired, using smaller lures, or the wind is an issue.

The Tackle Industries 7' XH is perfect for him. I have a lot of parents buy that rod for their kids between 10-14yrs old. Throws lures from 1oz up to 8oz with ease. Also on sale for $100 right now.

If you do buy that rod for your son make sure you shoot me an email right after. I will throw in a new Double 8 bucktail for him. Got to start the kids off right

Thanks for all the feedback, guys. I'm going to try a 7'6 MH with a Curado EJ. That should last him a few years.
