I've not spent enough time on them to have any idea if "flowing" water reaches the same temps as lake water, but based on some previous comments regarding temperature vs. oxygen levels, would a river be a good place to "scratch the itch" during the the dog days? |

I am no expert, but the dissolved oxygen will definitely be higher in a river system over a lake. How much higher I am unsure. I don't fish rivers much so I am unsure of mid summer temps.

For many years I've used a portable monitor made by Yellow Springs Instruments for DO and temperature readings in the wastewater field. Orion also is another unit that is able to measure those parameters.

Location: Contrarian Island | no, the Tuesday league which I'm in hasn't fished in about 6 weeks.. or maybe 7... we all love to fish, and all want to be out there, but when it's 80 at the surface and 78, 15 feet down we are smart enough to know it's not that good for the fish... we will wait til cooler water and get back out there, lots of time left in the season.....

The Reader's Digest condensed version is that flowing water provides negligible increases in Oxygen levels vs a lake. Furthermore the constant current in a river makes fish have to work harder after release to keep pointed upstream and right side up. The long and short was that rivers along with lakes both need to be avoided at temps above 80 Fahrenheit. |

Location: Yahara River Chain | In flowing rivers to get an increase in dissolved oxygen the water must aerate by going over a falls or an aggressive rapids. And we all know that warmer water does NOT retain that dissolve oxygen like cooler water does. |

I agree with Andrew ... broaden your horizons and find other fishing outlets. |
