We have been going to LOTW first week of August now for about 5 years. Fish mostly up near Wiley Point.

We haven't really had any issues with the algae bloom that first week of August. My buddy wants to push the trip back a week to the second week of August next year.

I know the later you go the greater the risk of running into bloom.

I know it's weather dependent but are we going to notice much difference between first and second week of August when it comes to the bloom?

Thanks

For some reason the bloom is hitting later every year. I remember in 1991 bloom on opening day. You can't predict it. There was areas of pretty good bloom last week

We've been typically going up in mid-to-late August, since the late '90's. (Have also been up in June/July a number of times, so I've seen what the lake looks like without the green stuff). It varies, but there is always some degree of bloom when we've gone in Aug, and yes, generally, the later in Aug, the worse it is. Seeing and then reacting to following fish is the main drawback, but personally, I've never felt that the green stuff was that big of an issue. Good spots still seem to be good spots. At times, I've actually thought that a moderate amount of the green stuff can actually be an aid. Otherwise, the prevailing winds and natural current (esp. up near the Big Narrows) seem to move the stuff around enough that you can always find clean or at least "clean enough" water.

Lived in Kenora for many years and algae blooms can occur quite frequently. When this occurred I would focus on the deeper clear water of Whitefish and Clearwater Bay areas where the blooms were non-existent and the fishing consistent.

Consider planning a trip to these types of waters if a summer is trending on the hot side.
