I'm having a heck of a time tying a Palomar Knot with 100 lb fluorocarbon for leaders. The line simply does not slip through to complete the knot. What knot do others use for tying heavy fluorocarbon?

Greetings,

I assume that you are making some leaders with the heavy weight fluorocarbon. I use a nail knot when tying my own leaders. I make the knot with a Dubro Nail Knotter tool. It's easy to use and works great! I bought the tool from Rollie & Helen's many years ago for around $15. I think that you could use this tool to tie a nail knot with the plastic line from a weed whacker tool.

Good fishing and tight lines!!

Lee Tauchen has a pdf online of a knot I used in the past before I switched to crimps. With some practice it would set great with 160lb.

I agree this is a great knot for heavy fluoro, and you can tie this knot EASILY with the $10 Magnum Tie-Fast tool

I've used this knot for years without any failures. Simply to tie once you get the hang of it. I prefer to leave a tag end at the top of my leader to deter weeds from running down the line. Makes this easy as well.

for tying snap or snap-swivel to fluorocarbon use simple clinch knot. It will never let go and is very easy to tie. Only use 3 twist before finishing knot. For direct tie to superline use uni to uni knot only 4 turns with the heavy fluorocarbon as directed by Seaguar.
Never had a knot break or slip thru.

I've used a perfection loop on 175 lb fluorocarbon for the last couple years without issue.

Crimps...if done right, with the right tools, they will never slip through...but just to be sure melt the end of the tag end and mushroom it out and that'll keep it from slipping through in case the crimp wasn't done right. I tried tying and it was just too frustrating but then again I didn't have a tool to help. Goes a lot quicker and less line material doing it with crimps.
