Posts: 241 | I did some bluegill fishing with my daughter on Saturday, giving the muskies a little rest with the warm water. Anyhow ran about 15 minutes to the spot, then anchored, re positioned with the electric. In short, I didn't run my 40hp motor for about 6 hours. When we where ready to leave I clicked it over and nothing. The trim/tilt wouldn't go. I disconnected and reconnected my deep-cycle and she started right up back to the launch, etc. OK - now to my question. How long can I run a Lowrance HDI-5 without draining the battery? I also had my white light on while anchored until the sun came up. How much run time do I need for the motors alternator to recharge? Last, can I connect my unit to the deep cycle battery instead of the starting battery? Thanks in advance. Backdraft

Posts: 444 Location: Duluth, MN | I run my electronics on their own battery. I have a Garmin 9 inch unit and a Bird Helix 7 on a Duracell Group 31. You can run them all day and all night. Not a direct answer to your question but if you have room for an extra battery it's the way to go.

Location: Contrarian Island | your battery is either shot or it wasn't charged... I can run 2 hds 10s, my 4 speaker stereo, livewell recirculating, and my lights for 12 hrs and still have juice... I think your battery was low, or it's shot... did you have it plugged in / charged before going out?? imo there is no need to run a seperate battery for just electronics... it's overkill.. a good 27 or 31 AGM starting battery can run all your stuff and have plenty of juice to start your motor... Posts: 2067 | I dealt with the same thing this spring. I'd plug my boat in after every time out.. battery would start the boat fine, until I fish 4+ hrs, then it would barely crank fast enough to start big motor, till one day she didn't have enough juice ..replaced it zero problems since.

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | Agree with the others, something was up with your battery. For reference, I run an old Lowrance 520C GPS (5 inch screen) off a Vexilar gel cell battery all day in sub freezing temps while ice fishing and it lasts just fine. That battery might weigh 3 pounds? In fairness I don't usually have the GPS on the whole time, but the point is, your cranking battery should have more than enough reserve to run all the electronics you need and start your boat just fine. You can connect your electronics to the deep cell, but shouldn't need to. The alternator should pretty much keep your battery charged enough to run everything and keep the battery topped off if you are making any reasonable runs (15 minutes like you said). But, if the battery is toast, something was left on, or perhaps a short of something draining the battery, you could have problems.

Posts: 3508 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Hiya, One way to battle this issue is when you go to replace your battery (when time calls for it) is to get a dual purpose battery that has both starting and deep cycle capabilities. This type of battery is designed to drain slowly for those electronics that don't use a huge amount of Juice, but yet still have the cranking ability for the motor to get it going. I too at one time had this issue with my battery not having enough charge running graphs, a stereo, marine radio, livewell, mooring/navigation lights, etc. For a starting battery, I feel it is just too much draw on the battery.... Location: Contrarian Island | agreed on the dual purpose, I run this battery in my Ranger and it powers everything all day and starts my 175 no prob... http://www.farmandfleet.com/products/661624-duration-agm-blue-marin...

Posts: 1209 | Yeah new battery time. But to picture what a sonar does to a battery I have a reference. A vexilar ice fishing sonar uses .5 amps per hour and a 9ah "amp hour" battery will run for 18 hours. A cranking battery with 800 cold cranking amps normally has about 100-120 ah, and my 959 takes .95 amps per hour "aph" 999 takes 1.15 aph and hds9t takes 1.20 aph. The three of them will run for 35-40 hours on a good condition battery in optimal conditions with no unintentional power loss. I could tell you how they test batteries to get those numbers but my poor grammar would tick off others haha it is cool though.
