Fishermen are just like baseball players......not athletes!!!

Huh? Bo Jackson, Deion Sanders and Michael Jordan all said the baseball season was brutal. You have more credentials than those old boyz? I couldn't do it in college but could play hoops and football.

I wish golf was like fishing in sense that it would great to occasionally see the hole come screaming across the green and swallow your ball hahaha!!

Seriously though not athletes.

People that have never/don't play or enjoy baseball have no idea of the level of intensity!

We are musky hunters and we are athletes. If you say we aren't, then you are a girlie-man!

This is a line that is blurred and it really doesn't mean much anyway. In some circles a competitive fisherman is considered an athlete for reasons that have nothing to do with being athletic. Take High School or College Bass Fishing. This kids are considered athletes by their state and national sanctioning bodies. This is just a general name given to a person that competes in a competition not just a sport. The same name of athlete may also be given to a Violin player in a high school competition. I think we can all agree that a Violin player is not an athlete. I know, I played the Violin in High school. I also played hockey. If someone asked if I was an athlete, my answer was yes. However,it was not because I played the Violin in a competition. Now, when we talk about the recreational fisherman, and for that matter, the professional tournament angler. These people are not athletes either! Yes, it takes practice and good form to be able to fish for muskies for 10 hours. That still does not make a fisherman an athlete. The Violin player needs many hours of practice and good form as well. neither are an "athletic" athlete. To be considered an athlete, it is my opinion that the competition is one that requires the competitor to use strength , speed , and agility to overcome his/her opponent. In competitive fishing we may need to physically fit to fish all day and we may need a fast boat, and we may need good balance. Athletes? I dont think we are that.
Now ask if I'm full of BS. Yep!!! I've got that market cornered on that.

You're not an esox athlete if...

you've fallen in.
you can't roll with the waves and stumble around the boat.
you pulled something while doing any aspect of fishing.
you did the splits off the dock into the boat without trying.
you need a breather before finishing winching the boat up.
you drank more beer cans each day fishing than miles walked/ran/biked in a week.
your run to the truck from the dock is your longest "sprint" since high school.

Three hour "game", Team up to bat....90% of players sitting in dugout. Team playing field....90% of players waiting for a ball to come their way! At least chucking big baits keeps us active all day but we're still not athletes.

Any anything that can be conducted while drinking a beer is an activity, not a sport. Thus, not an athlete.

If this is the standard a lot of sports just became activities.

I'm fine with that.  So I'm not an athlete.  I'll get over it.  Pass me a beer.

Look guys, for YEARS I've been telling my better half that fishing is a sport and requires as much practice as possible to become proficient in it. Much like athletes! So if she reads this and tells me I'm not going fishing, I'm personally holding you all respondsible!!!

Seriously though, as far as professionals go - if golfers are athletes, then so are anglers.
