I'm looking for a prop recommendation for a ranger 681 vs with a 115 intruder on it. The boat currently has an aluminum on it 14x 19. I'm looking for a stainless that will carry a decent load with good overall performance. Top speed is not a high priority for me over handling.

Try a viper. 15p should run well for you unless you run very light, in which case you might get away with a 17p.

I have a 97 681 with a 115 on it. I went to the local prop shop with the intention of spending some $$ on a stainless. The owner told me not to bother. Said I wouldn't see much difference over aluminum. Told him I really appreciated the honesty and bought a 19p aluminum. Works well. Sometimes wish I had a 17 for loaded hole shot.

I run a 17 SS on my 680c and it does the job well.

Thanks for the feedback. I have hears of some guys running a 4 blade prop for extra bow lift when running with heavy loads on this boat. The most common prop suggest was the 17 pitch viper stainless. If aluminum will work good, I may look into that option too. Maybe a 17 and a 19 so I have the ability to switch depending on load weight.

Hiya,

Before I make a suggestion, is it possible you have the numbers (RPM and GPS speed) you have currently with your 14 x 19 aluminum? The best prop, no matter what will be a compromise of some sort, depending on what you are looking for.

I am not extremely familiar with the layout of the 681. Does it have the gas tank forward? (my assumption is that it does). If that is the case, that makes the bow fairly heavy which is good for positioning in wind, but not so much for traversing in rougher conditions.

So...if you can supply any sort of data on that end, I'll do my best to help out..

Unless that tank is fairly full there isn't that much weight up there

I would look for an 18" pitch Raker to try.

I had a 115 fast strike on my 681 before I repowered with an etec. I tried a lot of props. The motor didn't have the horses for a four blade. I tend to run heavy with a full gas tank. My motor liked to run at the top of the RPM range and I enjoyed the great hole shot from a lower pitch. From memory mine ran in the mid 40's with a 15p viper and it was the only prop that truly gave me a great hole shot and kept the hull from bouncing. I run a 17p viper on my 135HO now and it's perfect. Don't shy away from the low pitch until you try it.

When I had a 681 and repowered it with a 115 Etec I called Ranger for recommendations. Ended up with a 15p Viper. It was a great prop for that boat.

Ranger suggested an 18 pitch raker. I'll see if I can find that or a 17 pitch viper. With the 15 pitch viper I would guess Rpms would get too high?

The Raker was fine when I had the 115 Faststrike, but when I went to the Etec the Viper was the way to go. My top speed was 42 with 4 people on board (and gear) crossing Big Bay on the V in light chop.

I have a 681vs. I have a 19 and 17 in aluminum, and a 18 in stainless. THe performance of the Stainless is superior over the aluminum.
