Location: MN | Buddy has a 90 hp Merc. Has milky fluid coming out the vent hole which is above the upper plug hole where you change the lower unit lube. He had it changed last fall. Has used it 3 weekends so far. So he's getting water in his lower unit. What are the usual suspects for entry?

Location: MN | May seem silly but when was the last time he replaced the seals on the plug holes? They do wear out and can get over crushed it the screws were locked down super tight, then its an issue when you go to reuse them. Just a thought. That would be the cheapest fix or thing to replace. |

Location: MN | I would check the seals again and make sure they are the blue fiber washers.

| A seal kit on the whole lower unit would be a good idea too. I had the prop seal fail on my motor last year after getting some braided line wrapped around the prop that I didn't notice right away. Had the exact same issue you described above of milky oil/water coming out of the vent above the lower unit fill hole. Seal kits aren't too expensive...cheaper than a new lower unit for sure! |
