Posts: 2 | So a few days ago I decided my new obsession is going to be casting for musky. I got a couple hellhounds, a medusa and a few other musky lures (buck tails, crankbaits). I really need to upgrade my setup and I need to do it on a very limited budget. I really have no interest in baitcasters because for some reason I can't grasp the concept. Any advice on a Spinning rod and reel? I plan on getting a more expensive legit setup come fall of winter when I have the funds. Also I plan on fishing lake st Clair on a ten foot dinghy. How bad of an idea is this?

Posts: 279 Location: Central Wisconsin | If you have to ask... sounds like you know the answer already. I wouldn't recommend going on a lake like St. Clair in a 14 footer, let alone a 10 footer. It might make a case for natural selection. As far as a rod, no problem fishing with a larger spinning rod/reel but odds are you would soon realize that you should have spent the time, money and effort to purchase and learn how to use a casting rod setup. Learn how to use the search function on this website and scroll through the countless posts on this site and you'll really shorten the learning curve. Good luck, I'd love to get over and fish that lake someday, it's on my bucket list.

Posts: 431 | The first few weeks of the season u have a few options in a little boat. Try the metro park daysail ramp and stay pretty close. I fish out of a kayak there for largemouth and gills early in the year and late in the year when I feel like leaving the boat atty home and getting a little workout. Once July hits the muskies aren't around there so much anymore though and your options will be a little limited. In front of the south road ramp could work too. Avoid weekends once summer sets in.

Posts: 49 | It's probably Todd in disguise. If he responds with the most vague answer, then we know its him. And if you're gonna mock someone, at least get spelling of the name right. Perhaps something French, for example Dumas. And if you had any kind of knowledge, you would know that your "dinghy" is more capable of big water then most 16' or 17' aluminium vhauls. There is a reason military and rescue crews use them. In fact if ur 60k Ranger ever goes down, its probably that dinghy thats going to be fishing you out.

Posts: 2 | No trolls here. My parents keep their boat at belle maer harbor, next to Mac rays and selfridge. That's where the dignhy is. I was planning on fishing out in front of selfridge, and back behind strawberry island at the mouths of the grassy canals and mouth of the south channel. don't really plan on leaving anchor bay. Also I take there really isn't a good setup you can use for bass and musky?

Posts: 163 | The SELECT MAGNUM 8' 6? Rod Found on this website http://reactionstrike.com/product/select-series/ is the ultimate beginners first rod. When I started musky fishing I said the same thing you did about bait casting. I didn't want to touch a bait caster. LONG story short I now have Bait casters on 90% of all my fishing rods (bass included)! So my advise is to take the advise of those who have experience and get a casting rod! As was stated before you can learn a wealth of knowledge online. Watch Youtube and learn to cast. For a reel i'd recommend any of the Revo Toro reels! Good luck!

Posts: 20265 Location: oswego, il | No this is not me trolling. I only have one username. I would be wary of going very far in that boat. Fish the weed beds by the launch that is about it. At that, wind is a factor as are big boat going in and out there. Your asking for trouble with the right circumstances which you cannot control.

Posts: 800 Location: Delavan, WI | Video you just showed is of an 8.5 meter rib boat which equals to 27 ft , now im no rocket scientists but Billy bob Thornton is a brave dude I still wouldn't go out on St Clair in a 10 ft dinghy. Waves out there can go from 1 to 5 ft in 10 minutes, been there done that. Seen rangers come in the marina with windshields missing, trolling motors busted off etc, etc just seems like a bad idea altogether, unless you plan on only staying in the safety of harbor, I wouldnt do it. Might save your life. Big water aint no joke
