Posts: 1828 | Has anyone fished Devil's Lake in the last couple years? With a guide? Any recommendations? My father-in-law wants to put together a weekend trip westward for a few of us. We are all experienced walleye fisherman but totally unfamiliar with Devils Lake, or really any lake outside of Northern MN. I'll be scouring around for information elsewhere, but figured I'd check if anyone here has done the trip. Thanks!

Location: MN | I'd suggest Aaron McQuoid. He is located on the west side of the lake in Minnewauken. He rents houses as well for pretty cheap. I prefer staying in Minnewauken to get the small town feel of ND but if you stay on the Devils side the casino rents cabins for pretty cheap. His guiding fees probably won't be the cheapest but he really knows his stuff, has very nice gear and runs a professional operation. He can show you spots for numbers and big fish. I am guessing if you rent his houses he'd give you some information to get you started even if you don't hire him as a guide. Say high to Aaron and Trish for me if you go to their place.

Posts: 1828 | Thanks. I've seen his info come up quite a bit. Nice to get a first-hand referral. How do you pronounce his last name? Mic-KOYD? What can be expected for "good" fishing, what is "slow", etc.? I know fishing is fishing, but how good is it, or how good can it be, out there? I'm used to fishing Winnie, Leech, and some good smaller lakes, where you can definitely have bad days and be humbled, but generally fishing is pretty good. I have a hard time justifying the long drive to catch some walleyes, but I'm gonna humor the F-I-L and get as much info as I can. Thanks again. Edited by jaultman 6/7/2016 10:12 AM

Location: MN | I've only fished it in the winter so I can't comment on the summer fishing. From what I understand the fishing fluctuates from year to year depending on forage. On a good year the bite is a heck of a lot better than leech or Winnie. I know the mcquoids from when we used to rent their houses during fall hunting trips. That's about right on the pronounciation. I know Aaron fishes just about everyday of the year so he should have them dialed in. The people I've talked to who have hired him have been happy. Give him a call and get a report for how the bite has been this year. He'll give you an honest answer. For that length of drive I'd go to lotw on the Canada side before i'd drive to Devils. Probably little more expensive but much better scenery and great fishing. Only drawback is you'd have to walleye fish with the FIL when you are in prime Muskie territory.

I was going to suggest LOTW or Rainy or something closer to him, but I realize that he's well aware of the quality fishing up there, so there's some other reason he's thinking about DL, ND. Thanks for more info on McQuoids.

Posts: 32954 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I'd go to Devils Lake in a minute if I wanted quality, numbers and action from Pike, White bass, Walleyes, and Perch. LOTW is more diverse and seems to me more of an 'adventure', but both offer killer fishing. If you want to bring back a cooler full of fillets, Devils is a good destination. My opinion, LOTW offers better trophy opportunities for Pike and walleyes, but devils has both. Eric Tilton as a guide, or check out Wooldland's guides, top shelf operation, lodging, and everything you need, all in one.

Posts: 1828 | Thanks Steve. I see Woodlands ads out there quite a bit. Got a couple good options now. Very good to hear that the fishing really is outstanding.
