Posts: 267 | Cloud7 - 3/22/2016 10:56 AM I hate to break you the news, but I think you would be ticketed in those scenarios. Best to just have a Mille Lacs box ready to go at the truck full of your >8" baits. Empty the boat of smaller baits. If you don't you are taking a risk of getting a ticket."Possession" is a tricky word, but in my interpretation of it I apply it to all live bait used for pike and musky, and all lures IN USE during the 10:00pm to 6:00 am periods. I think common sense should prevail here fellas. Scenario 1) I'm fishing from 5:00am to noon for musky. From 5:00am to 6:00am I'm going to make sure that all lures in use, and visible on my deck are over 8 inches long. After 6:00am I should be free to pull out any baits smaller that I may want to use. Scenario 2) I'm a multi-species angler. I spend the daylight hours fishing smallmouth and once the prime-time evening hours hit I put away all my bass gear and start casting for musky. I'm free to use any musky lure until 10:00pm, and after which time, I need to put away all my smaller lures and only toss my 8inch lures and longer. In both scenarios there's lures smaller than 8 inches in my possession, but not in use. I can't see any logical and/or semi-reasonable Conservation Officer trying to ticket me for having smaller lures in my possession so long as those lures are not in use, and especially if those lures are not readily available. My boat is an extension of my tackle box, and I'm not going to run all the way across the pond to sort and store all my smaller lures in my truck, and I don't expect the CO's to expect you to either. -C7

Posts: 29 | The prior posts are correct. There's no gray area here. There have been Mille Lacs night bans in the past that were "possession of fishing tackle" and if it was in your boat, even in storage, you were getting a ticket... or worse. It's disheartening to read some of the opinions in this topic and the other MN topic about targeting muskies out of season. Please remember when you're out there that you're on one of the most contentious muskie/walleye fisheries in the world right now and going out of your way to be a GOOD STEWARD of the muskie resource (and those that target them) goes a long way. Posts: 267 | The fact of the matter is, no matter if we like it or not, we all have to sacrifice to get this lake back on track. Having just 8" baits in the boat is not a huge thing to abide by for muskie anglers. Just think what walleye guys are sacrificing. Muskie guys need to sacrifice very little, but in the spirit of cooperation and support of anglers of all types, it is best to follow the law and be part of the solution.

X2 This needs to be a community effort.

Posts: 1220 | Obviously, my above post was just kidding around from a mostly idle mind with nothing much to do and a mostly lost and sadly missing libido. But, truthfully, and in all seriousness....I'd have to say that in all the places I've been as a musky angler, Mille Lacs is the most un-welcoming, and un-friendly place I've been. That's meant to include rude and ignorant statements made "out loud" to my face. Clearly, I'm so totally aware that these nut-jobs are not the common person you'd meet or in any way truly representative of the total population. But, as alluded to by others, these are damaged anglers, in a damaged angling economy, with a damaged fishery, who blame muskies while blinded to the size of an enormous fleet of predatory drift boats now rotting away. That's fine, they have a right to both their free speech and their opinion. Too bad though, I'd like to go back and stay in their resorts, eat in their restaurants, bars, buy their gas, fish for musky and not get the dirty looks or the trash talk. If it were me, I'd rather promote the resource I still have than mourn the one I peeed away. Northern Wisconsin would do well too to see that Smallies are, in fact, the new walleyes...and more fun to catch. I don't get the "dark house" they do over there, honestly don't get it, but I'm not going there, simply not going to pick a fight with another sportsman. Never thought Rodney King was a statesman, but "Can't we just get along??"
